The Canyons (Opunohu) – Moorea (Society Islands)

Site Overview

The Canyons of Opunohu provide thrilling drift diving through deep volcanic channels that cut through the reef system offshore from Moorea\'s spectacular Opunohu Bay. These underwater canyons were formed by ancient geological processes that created deep corridors in the reef structure, and today they serve as highways for pelagic species moving between the open ocean and the lagoon environment. Grey reef sharks are the most reliable large animal encounter, patrolling the canyon walls in impressive numbers as they ride the tidal currents through the system. Schools of barracuda form tight aggregations in the current flow at the canyon mouths, their silver bodies creating a shimmering wall that responds dynamically to approaching predators. Napoleon wrasse, some of the largest reef fish in the Pacific, cruise through the canyons with characteristic curiosity, often approaching divers to investigate their bubbles and movements. Dogtooth tuna make high-speed passes through the blue water beyond the canyon walls, their powerful builds allowing them to accelerate through baitfish schools with explosive force. Eagle rays glide along the canyon rims searching for food on the sandy platforms that border the reef structure. The current through the canyons can be strong, creating excellent drift diving conditions where divers are carried along the canyon system with minimal effort while observing the constant parade of marine life. The canyon walls are colonised by colourful soft corals and gorgonian fans that extend their polyps to capture plankton carried by the nutrient-rich current flow, adding colour and texture to the volcanic rock formations.
