Toopua (Toopua Wall) – Bora Bora (Society Islands)

Site Overview

Toopua Wall is one of Bora Bora's most dramatic dive sites, featuring a sheer vertical drop-off that plunges from shallow reef flats into the deep blue waters surrounding the island's outer barrier reef. The wall is encrusted with a diverse array of hard and soft corals that create a colourful tapestry of life against the dramatic vertical backdrop, with gorgonian fans extending their delicate lattice structures into the current to capture passing plankton and schools of anthias swirling in clouds of orange and purple along the wall face. Grey reef sharks patrol the deeper sections of the wall with their characteristic steady cruising movements, their sleek silhouettes visible in the blue water as they search for prey along the reef edge. Eagle rays soar past the wall in graceful flight, their broad wings creating elegant shadows against the coral-covered rock face as they navigate the currents that bring nutrients to this productive ecosystem. Schools of jacks form massive bait balls that shimmer like liquid silver in the sunlight, their coordinated movements creating mesmerising patterns that attract the attention of larger predators including dogtooth tuna that rocket through the bait balls with explosive speed. The occasional whale shark sighting during the plankton-rich months adds an extraordinary dimension to an already world-class dive site that consistently delivers thrilling pelagic encounters.
