Tubuai offers a diverse diving experience combining calm lagoon coral gardens with exciting outer reef pass diving in the remote Austral Islands, providing visitors with contrasting underwater environments within a single island destination. The lagoon features extensive coral gardens with giant clams, diverse reef fish communities, and calm conditions suitable for relaxed diving and photography sessions. Eagle rays are regularly encountered in both the lagoon and outer reef environments, their broad wings carrying them gracefully through the nutrient-rich water as they search for molluscs and crustaceans on the sandy substrate. The outer reef passes offer more challenging diving with moderate currents bringing pelagic species including grey reef sharks and schooling barracuda to the pass entrances where they patrol for prey concentrated by the tidal flow. Giant clams are abundant in the lagoon, with several large specimens displaying their magnificent iridescent mantles in the clear southern waters that are cooler than the tropical lagoons of the northern archipelagos. The very limited number of dive operators on Tubuai means that the marine environment remains virtually untouched by diving pressure, creating authentic encounters with marine life behaving naturally in an undisturbed ecosystem. The combination of lagoon and outer reef environments provides excellent variety for divers spending multiple days exploring the island's underwater offerings.

"Descend from the boat into either the calm lagoon waters or the more dynamic outer reef environment depending on the day's dive plan and conditions. In the lagoon, coral gardens support diverse fish communities and giant clams with their iridescent mantles create spectacular photographic subjects. Eagle rays patrol the sandy areas between coral formations with their graceful wing movements. In the outer reef passes, grey reef sharks patrol the deeper sections while schooling barracuda form their characteristic aggregations in the current. Green turtles visit both environments, grazing on algae and seagrass with their methodical feeding behaviour. The clear southern waters provide excellent visibility for appreciating the full scale of both environments from a distance.
