Vaitahu Bay – Hiva Oa & Tahuata (Marquesas)

Site Overview

Vaitahu Bay on Tahuata offers a calm and productive shallow diving experience featuring coral patches and diverse macro life in the protected waters of this small volcanic island in the remote Marquesas archipelago. The bay supports small but thriving coral communities that have developed in the sheltered environment, creating habitats for diverse marine organisms including cuttlefish that are the signature species at this site. Cuttlefish are abundant throughout the bay, their remarkable colour-changing abilities providing endless fascination as they pulse through patterns of brown, white, and iridescent purple while hunting small crustaceans among the coral rubble and sand. The nudibranch diversity at Vaitahu Bay is impressive for the Marquesas, with numerous species of colourful sea slugs crawling across the substrate in search of their preferred food organisms that grow on the coral patches and volcanic rock surfaces. Moray eels inhabit the crevices and overhangs throughout the bay, with several species represented in the diverse boulder and coral habitat. The calm conditions and shallow depth profile make Vaitahu Bay an ideal site for training dives, refresher dives, and macro photography sessions where divers can spend quality time with individual subjects without the pressure of depth limits or current concerns. The site provides a gentle complement to the more dramatic wall and pelagic dives available elsewhere in the Marquesas.
