    Site Overview

The Alonissos National Marine Park is the crown of the Sporades and one of the most important marine protected areas in the Mediterranean, established above all to safeguard the endangered Mediterranean monk seal. Diving here is strictly guided and limited to designated zones, but within them the water is pristine and the life abundant: steep walls clad in gorgonians, groupers patrolling the ledges, and a healthy fish community that thrives because the area is protected. The lucky few may even glimpse a monk seal, the park’s shy flagship. It is a versatile site — confident Open Water divers enjoy the bright top, while advanced divers drop down the wall for the deeper gorgonian gardens. Diving here is as much an act of conservation as recreation, and the sense of a truly wild, healthy sea is unforgettable. Alonissos – National Marine Park sits within Aegean – Sporades & North-East Aegean and is best described as a wall and reef dive. The water here is typically clear, and the profile — from around 6 m down to 35 m — gives intermediate divers a rewarding range of routes. Among the life you can expect are Mediterranean Monk Seal, Red Gorgonian, Dusky Grouper, Anthias, Bogue. The site rewards a slow, observant approach, and good buoyancy keeps both diver and reef safe. With sensible planning around weather and boats, it ranks among the more memorable stops on a Greek diving trip.

    Dive Briefing

"After a briefing on the park’s rules, the guided group enters at the designated zone and descends along the line to the top of the wall at 6–10 m. The guide leads a slow descent along the face, pointing out gorgonians and groupers and reminding divers of the strict no-touch, no-chase discipline. Advanced divers can continue toward 30–35 m while monitoring gas and no-deco limits. Divers stay off the wall to protect the gorgonians and maintain control in any current. After the deepest point, the group spirals up the wall, finishing with a safety stop in the bright shallows. A DSMB is deployed before surfacing. The dive ends with a controlled ladder re-entry. On the day, the guide runs a full briefing covering entry, descent line, depth limits and the turn point. Divers follow the plan at a relaxed pace, keeping close to the group and watching depth and gas. The route makes the most of the wall and reef features while staying within no-decompression limits. A safety stop in the shallows rounds off the dive before a controlled ascent and DSMB deployment if needed."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

The marine park suits Open Water divers on the shallow top and advanced divers on the deeper wall, making it a good shared site for mixed-ability groups. It is a must for anyone who cares about marine conservation and for photographers after pristine walls. Good buoyancy is needed near the gorgonians, and a semi-dry helps on the deeper sections. Confident boat divers will enjoy it most on a calm, guided day. It is a good choice for intermediate divers who want a mix of marine life and scenery without extreme demands. Photographers will find plenty to frame, and buddy pairs can explore comfortably once briefed. Those new to the area should dive with a local centre to make the most of conditions and site knowledge.
