Apella Wall is the dramatic drop-off on Karpathos’ unspoilt south-east coast, where the limestone plunges from a shallow plateau to 50 m and is clad in healthy gorgonian gardens. The remote, wild position means the wall can have swell and a steady current, so it is best for confident advanced divers, but the reward is pristine topography, superb visibility and the chance of pelagics — amberjack hunt in the blue and dolphins are occasionally seen. It is a true big-water Aegean dive, with the famous Apella beach towering above and the blue stretching to the horizon. For photographers the gorgonian gardens in the 20–30 m band are superb, and for deep-certified divers the wall offers a real sense of adventure at the edge of the Dodecanese.
