    Site Overview

Karydi, Porto Koufo and the Sartorius wreck together make Sithonia’s most rewarding dive, combining a steep wall, a deep natural harbour and a cargo ship resting at 18–30 m. The wall drops through clear water dressed in gorgonians, the harbour schools with amberjack and barracuda, and the Sartorius wreck has become an artificial reef thronging with groupers and morays. It is a versatile site: confident Open Water divers enjoy the bright top and the shallow reef, while advanced divers drop down the wall and explore the wreck’s outer decks. With the famous shelter of Porto Koufo and reliable conditions, this is a signature Chalkidiki dive that pairs drama with fish-filled abundance. Karydi, Porto Koufo & Sartorius Wreck (Chalkidiki – Sithonia) sits within Mainland – Northern Greece (Macedonia & Thrace) and is best described as a wall and wreck dive. The water here is typically clear, and the profile — from around 6 m down to 30 m — gives intermediate divers a rewarding range of routes. Among the life you can expect are Amberjack, Barracuda, Dusky Grouper, Mediterranean Moray, Bogue. The site rewards a slow, observant approach, and good buoyancy keeps both diver and reef safe. With sensible planning around weather and boats, it ranks among the more memorable stops on a Greek diving trip.

    Dive Briefing

"The boat moves from the wall to the wreck, anchoring in turn. At the wall the group descends to the top at 6–10 m and the guide leads a slow descent, pointing out groupers and gorgonians. At the Sartorius, divers circle the outside, swimming the open decks with a torch; penetration beyond bright doorway sections is prohibited. Advanced divers can continue toward 30 m while monitoring gas. A DSMB is deployed before surfacing. The dive ends with a controlled ladder re-entry. On the day, the guide runs a full briefing covering entry, descent line, depth limits and the turn point. Divers follow the plan at a relaxed pace, keeping close to the group and watching depth and gas. The route makes the most of the wall and wreck features while staying within no-decompression limits. A safety stop in the shallows rounds off the dive before a controlled ascent and DSMB deployment if needed."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

This site suits Open Water divers on the shallow top and advanced divers on the deeper wall and wreck, making it a good shared site for mixed-ability groups. It is excellent for photographers after schooling fish and for anyone who enjoys a wall-and-wreck combo. Good buoyancy is needed near the wreck, and a semi-dry helps on the deeper sections. Confident boat divers will enjoy it most on a calm day. It is a good choice for intermediate divers who want a mix of marine life and scenery without extreme demands. Photographers will find plenty to frame, and buddy pairs can explore comfortably once briefed. Those new to the area should dive with a local centre to make the most of conditions and site knowledge.
