    Site Overview

Lake Kerkini is a shallow wetland reservoir in northern Greece, far better known for its spectacular birdlife than its diving — but its calm, sheltered water makes it a useful training and snorkel site. Visibility is naturally low, so the diving is about close-focus skills and the small freshwater life among the reeds: shoaling fish, the occasional pond turtle and crabs in the shallows. Most visitors come to snorkel or to complete pool-like training dives, and the experience is gentle and forgiving. It is where northern Greek divers often build confidence, and a peaceful counterpoint to the sea. Above the surface, the lake is a world-class birdwatching destination, making it a great family stop. Lake Kerkini (Serres) sits within Inland Freshwater Sites and is best described as a lake and wetland dive. The water here is typically clear, and the profile — from around 1 m down to 12 m — gives beginner divers a rewarding range of routes. Among the life you can expect are Freshwater Fish, European Pond Turtle, Freshwater Crab, Eel, Reed-associated Fish. The site rewards a slow, observant approach, and good buoyancy keeps both diver and reef safe. With sensible planning around weather and boats, it ranks among the more memorable stops on a Greek diving trip.

    Dive Briefing

"The group kits up at the lakeshore and wades in, gaining buoyancy before descending to the shallow bottom at 2–6 m. The guide leads a slow tour among the reeds, pointing out fish and turtles and reminding divers to keep fins up to avoid silting. With a maximum depth of 12 m the dive is long and relaxed, ideal for skills practice or macro photography in low visibility. The ascent and exit are made back to the shore. Buoyancy and close-focus are the key skills. On the day, the guide runs a full briefing covering entry, descent line, depth limits and the turn point. Divers follow the plan at a relaxed pace, keeping close to the group and watching depth and gas. The route makes the most of the lake and wetland features while staying within no-decompression limits. A safety stop in the shallows rounds off the dive before a controlled ascent and DSMB deployment if needed."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Lake Kerkini is perfect for beginners, training dives and snorkellers, with an easy shore entry and a maximum depth of only 12 m. It is also a favourite of macro photographers comfortable in low visibility and anyone who prefers small subjects. Because it is shallow and sheltered, it suits nervous divers and children building confidence. Experienced divers use it as a relaxed, low-visibility skills dive. It is a good choice for beginner divers who want a mix of marine life and scenery without extreme demands. Photographers will find plenty to frame, and buddy pairs can explore comfortably once briefed. Those new to the area should dive with a local centre to make the most of conditions and site knowledge.
