    Site Overview

Mavrolimni is a quiet brackish lagoon near Aigio on the Corinthian Gulf coast, used primarily as a calm, shallow training and macro site away from the open sea. The lake rolls from the shoreline to about 12 m, crossing sand and algae that support a small community of crabs, eels and shoaling fish. The sheltered, near-still water keeps conditions forgiving for new divers, while the low visibility makes it a good place to practise buoyancy and skills without distraction. It is where many Peloponnese divers take their first breaths and where experienced divers return for an easy, low-stress dive. Quiet and unpretentious, Mavrolimni is the gentle flip-side of the region’s walls and wrecks. Mavrolimni (Aigio) sits within Peloponnese – West Coast (Patras, Corinthian Gulf) and is best described as a lake and training dive. The water here is typically clear, and the profile — from around 1 m down to 12 m — gives beginner divers a rewarding range of routes. Among the life you can expect are Freshwater Crab, Eel, Marsh Fish, Freshwater Shrimp, Common Frog. The site rewards a slow, observant approach, and good buoyancy keeps both diver and reef safe. With sensible planning around weather and boats, it ranks among the more memorable stops on a Greek diving trip.

    Dive Briefing

"The group kits up at the lagoon edge and wades in, gaining buoyancy before descending to the sloping bottom at 3–6 m. The guide leads a slow tour, pointing out crabs and shoaling fish and reminding divers to keep fins up to avoid silting the sand. With a maximum depth of 12 m the dive is long and relaxed, ideal for skills practice or macro photography. The ascent and exit are made back to the shore, where kit is rinsed. Buoyancy in the slightly brackish water is the key skill. On the day, the guide runs a full briefing covering entry, descent line, depth limits and the turn point. Divers follow the plan at a relaxed pace, keeping close to the group and watching depth and gas. The route makes the most of the lake and training features while staying within no-decompression limits. A safety stop in the shallows rounds off the dive before a controlled ascent and DSMB deployment if needed."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Mavrolimni is perfect for beginners, training dives and discover-scuba experiences, with an easy shore entry and a maximum depth of only 12 m. It is also a favourite of macro photographers and anyone who prefers small subjects to big walls. Because it is shallow and sheltered, it suits nervous divers and children building confidence. Experienced divers use it as a relaxing dive between more demanding sites. It is a good choice for beginner divers who want a mix of marine life and scenery without extreme demands. Photographers will find plenty to frame, and buddy pairs can explore comfortably once briefed. Those new to the area should dive with a local centre to make the most of conditions and site knowledge.
