    Site Overview

The Selinos Gorge offers an underwater counterpart to Crete’s famous land gorges, with rocky walls and small caverns dropping from a shallow plateau to about 35 m and alive with macro life. The site, off Paleochora on the wild south coast, is sheltered and forgiving, making it a favourite for macro photographers and for anyone who loves slow, close-up observation. Lobsters tuck into the cracks, nudibranchs freckle the algae, and morays watch from the walls. With reliable conditions and a short boat ride, the Selinos Gorge is a lovely half-day out and a great place to really look at the Mediterranean up close. It captures the unspoilt, green character of south Crete and makes an ideal dive for those who prefer small wonders to big walls. Selinos Gorge Underwater (Paleochora) sits within Crete (South Coast, Libyan Sea) and is best described as a reef and cavern dive. The water here is typically clear, and the profile — from around 5 m down to 35 m — gives intermediate divers a rewarding range of routes. Among the life you can expect are European Lobster, Nudibranch, Mediterranean Moray, Dusky Grouper, Wrasse. The site rewards a slow, observant approach, and good buoyancy keeps both diver and reef safe. With sensible planning around weather and boats, it ranks among the more memorable stops on a Greek diving trip.

    Dive Briefing

"The boat anchors above the walls and the group descends to the rocky slope at 5–10 m. The guide leads a slow tour, pointing out lobsters and nudibranchs and reminding divers to keep fins up to avoid silting the wall. With a max depth of 35 m the profile is relaxed, leaving plenty of gas for a long safety stop in the bright shallows. A DSMB is deployed before surfacing to warn boat traffic. The dive ends with a controlled ladder re-entry. On the day, the guide runs a full briefing covering entry, descent line, depth limits and the turn point. Divers follow the plan at a relaxed pace, keeping close to the group and watching depth and gas. The route makes the most of the reef and cavern features while staying within no-decompression limits. A safety stop in the shallows rounds off the dive before a controlled ascent and DSMB deployment if needed."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

The Selinos Gorge suits Open Water divers on the shallow top and advanced divers on the deeper walls, making it a good shared site for mixed-ability groups. It is a favourite of macro photographers and of anyone who prefers small subjects to big walls. Good buoyancy over the walls is the main skill, and a semi-dry helps on the deeper sections. Confident boat divers will enjoy it most on a calm day. It is a good choice for intermediate divers who want a mix of marine life and scenery without extreme demands. Photographers will find plenty to frame, and buddy pairs can explore comfortably once briefed. Those new to the area should dive with a local centre to make the most of conditions and site knowledge.
