    Site Overview

The Kastro Reef and Blue Cave are the gentle highlights of Thasos, where a limestone wall meets a lit sea cave dressed in groupers, lobsters and anthias. Diving here is a blend of reef and light: you fin along the wall, then into the blue cave where the sun streams through and reveals the recess life. The site is shallow and sheltered enough for Open Water divers, but the magic depends on calm, sunny conditions and careful buoyancy to keep the water clear. It is as much a photography trip as a dive, and the combination of geology and easy fish life makes it a Thasos essential. Paired with the island’s other sites, it shows the friendly, fish-rich character of the north Aegean’s most easterly island. Thasos – Kastro Reef & Blue Cave sits within Mainland – Northern Greece (Macedonia & Thrace) and is best described as a reef and cave dive. The water here is typically clear, and the profile — from around 4 m down to 30 m — gives beginner divers a rewarding range of routes. Among the life you can expect are Dusky Grouper, European Lobster, Mediterranean Moray, Anthias, Nudibranch. The site rewards a slow, observant approach, and good buoyancy keeps both diver and reef safe. With sensible planning around weather and boats, it ranks among the more memorable stops on a Greek diving trip.

    Dive Briefing

"The boat anchors at the reef and the group descends to the wall at 4–10 m. The guide leads a slow tour, pointing out groupers and lobsters, then signals the swim into the blue cave, using a torch to reveal the recess life. Divers keep fins up to avoid silting. The shallow depth allows a long, relaxed dive, finishing with a safety stop in the bright shallows. A DSMB is deployed before surfacing to warn boat traffic. The dive ends with a careful re-entry at the boat. On the day, the guide runs a full briefing covering entry, descent line, depth limits and the turn point. Divers follow the plan at a relaxed pace, keeping close to the group and watching depth and gas. The route makes the most of the reef and cave features while staying within no-decompression limits. A safety stop in the shallows rounds off the dive before a controlled ascent and DSMB deployment if needed."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

The Kastro Reef and Blue Cave suit Open Water divers and above, with shallow depths and a sheltered, cavern-like environment that is more about light than challenge. They are a favourite of photographers and of anyone who loves easy reef-and-cave diving, and a great second dive of the day. Beginners should focus on buoyancy to preserve clarity, while experienced divers enjoy the recess life. Confident boat divers will get the most from a calm, sunny window. It is a good choice for beginner divers who want a mix of marine life and scenery without extreme demands. Photographers will find plenty to frame, and buddy pairs can explore comfortably once briefed. Those new to the area should dive with a local centre to make the most of conditions and site knowledge.
