    Site Overview

The Arch at Skiathos is a gentle, shallow dive site centred on a natural rock arch and the small cavern behind it, making it a perfect introduction to cavern diving in the Sporades. The formation is draped in algae and scattered with life: glassfish shimmer in the shadow of the arch, morays peer from the holes, and anthias flit through the light. Because it is shallow and sheltered, the site is ideal for Open Water divers and training, while the photographic light through the arch delights more experienced divers. It is a relaxed, fish-filled dive close to Skiathos Town, and a great first or second dive of the day. For visitors who want an easy taste of the Sporades’ clear water and soft light, The Arch is a dependable favourite. The Arch (Skiathos) sits within Aegean – Sporades & North-East Aegean and is best described as a cave and cavern dive. The water here is typically clear, and the profile — from around 4 m down to 18 m — gives beginner divers a rewarding range of routes. Among the life you can expect are Glassfish, Mediterranean Moray, Anthias, Common Octopus, Wrasse. The site rewards a slow, observant approach, and good buoyancy keeps both diver and reef safe. With sensible planning around weather and boats, it ranks among the more memorable stops on a Greek diving trip.

    Dive Briefing

"The boat anchors at the formation and the group descends to the sandy floor at 4–8 m. The guide leads a slow tour through the arch and into the small cavern, using a torch to reveal morays and glassfish and reminding divers to keep fins up so the water stays clear. The shallow depth allows a long, relaxed dive, finishing with a safety stop in the bright shallows. A DSMB is deployed before surfacing to warn boat traffic. The dive ends with a careful re-entry at the boat. On the day, the guide runs a full briefing covering entry, descent line, depth limits and the turn point. Divers follow the plan at a relaxed pace, keeping close to the group and watching depth and gas. The route makes the most of the cave and cavern features while staying within no-decompression limits. A safety stop in the shallows rounds off the dive before a controlled ascent and DSMB deployment if needed."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

The Arch suits Open Water divers and above, with shallow depths and a sheltered, cavern-like environment that is more about light than challenge. It is a favourite of photographers and of anyone who loves easy cavern diving, and a great training or second dive of the day. Beginners should focus on buoyancy to preserve clarity, while experienced divers enjoy the arch light and the recess life. Confident boat divers will get the most from a calm, sunny window. It is a good choice for beginner divers who want a mix of marine life and scenery without extreme demands. Photographers will find plenty to frame, and buddy pairs can explore comfortably once briefed. Those new to the area should dive with a local centre to make the most of conditions and site knowledge.
