    Site Overview

The Tunnel at Samos is a fun, shallow swim-through carved into the island’s limestone coast, where divers fin through a lit passage and emerge into a small chamber dressed in nudibranchs and anthias. Diving the tunnel is a gentle, sheltered experience suited to Open Water divers, with octopus and morays in the recesses and the bright Aegean water making the white rock glow. The site is close to Kokkari and reliable enough for a lovely wide-angle photography trip as much as a dive. It is a perfect half-day from Samos and a great second dive of the day. For visitors who want an easy taste of cavern diving without the commitment of a deep or technical site, The Tunnel is an accessible, fish-filled introduction. The Tunnel (Samos) sits within Aegean – Sporades & North-East Aegean and is best described as a cave and cavern dive. The water here is typically clear, and the profile — from around 3 m down to 22 m — gives beginner divers a rewarding range of routes. Among the life you can expect are Nudibranch, Common Octopus, Mediterranean Moray, Anthias, Glassfish. The site rewards a slow, observant approach, and good buoyancy keeps both diver and reef safe. With sensible planning around weather and boats, it ranks among the more memorable stops on a Greek diving trip.

    Dive Briefing

"The boat anchors at the tunnel mouth and the group enters in pairs, descending to the sandy floor at 3–8 m. The guide leads a slow swim-through, using a torch to reveal nudibranchs and octopus and reminding divers to keep fins up so the light is not clouded by silt. Photographers get a clear signal for the best light moment. The shallow depth allows a long, relaxed dive, finishing with a safety stop in the bright entrance. A DSMB is deployed before surfacing to warn boat traffic. The dive ends with a careful re-entry at the boat. On the day, the guide runs a full briefing covering entry, descent line, depth limits and the turn point. Divers follow the plan at a relaxed pace, keeping close to the group and watching depth and gas. The route makes the most of the cave and cavern features while staying within no-decompression limits. A safety stop in the shallows rounds off the dive before a controlled ascent and DSMB deployment if needed."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

The Tunnel suits Open Water divers and above, with shallow depths and a sheltered, cavern-like environment that is more about light than challenge. It is a favourite of photographers and of anyone who loves easy cavern diving, and a great second dive of the day. Beginners should focus on buoyancy to preserve clarity, while experienced divers enjoy the reflections and the recess life. Confident boat divers will get the most from a calm, sunny window. It is a good choice for beginner divers who want a mix of marine life and scenery without extreme demands. Photographers will find plenty to frame, and buddy pairs can explore comfortably once briefed. Those new to the area should dive with a local centre to make the most of conditions and site knowledge.
