    Site Overview

The Valleys at Plakias are among south Crete’s most beautiful dives, a series of stunning rock formations and canyons carved into the Libyan Sea coast and lit by exceptionally clear water. The visibility here is legendary, frequently 40 m or more, turning the canyons into a glass-clear stage for groupers, nudibranchs and the occasional school of barracuda. It is a versatile site: confident Open Water divers enjoy the bright shallows, while advanced divers drop down the canyons for the deeper walls and the chance of larger fish. Its remoteness and the warm, clear Libyan water keep it pristine and lightly dived, and the sheer clarity makes it a dream for wide-angle photography. The Valleys capture the wild, unspoilt beauty of Crete’s south coast. The Valleys (Plakias) sits within Crete (South Coast, Libyan Sea) and is best described as a reef and canyon dive. The water here is typically clear, and the profile — from around 6 m down to 40 m — gives intermediate divers a rewarding range of routes. Among the life you can expect are Dusky Grouper, Nudibranch, Barracuda, Mediterranean Moray, Bogue. The site rewards a slow, observant approach, and good buoyancy keeps both diver and reef safe. With sensible planning around weather and boats, it ranks among the more memorable stops on a Greek diving trip.

    Dive Briefing

"The boat anchors above the canyons and the group descends along the shot line to the top of the formations at 6–10 m. The guide leads a slow descent along the walls, pointing out groupers and nudibranchs and allowing advanced divers to continue toward 35–40 m while monitoring gas and no-deco limits. Divers stay off the rock to protect the formations and maintain control in any current. After the deepest point, the group spirals up, finishing with a safety stop in the bright shallows. A DSMB is deployed before surfacing. The dive ends with a controlled ladder re-entry. On the day, the guide runs a full briefing covering entry, descent line, depth limits and the turn point. Divers follow the plan at a relaxed pace, keeping close to the group and watching depth and gas. The route makes the most of the reef and canyon features while staying within no-decompression limits. A safety stop in the shallows rounds off the dive before a controlled ascent and DSMB deployment if needed."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

The Valleys suit Open Water divers on the shallow top and advanced divers on the deeper canyons, making it a good shared site for mixed-ability groups. It is a paradise for underwater photographers thanks to the clarity, and for anyone who loves dramatic rock and healthy reef. Good buoyancy is needed near the walls, and a semi-dry helps on the deeper sections. Confident boat divers will enjoy the remote, clear setting most. It is a good choice for intermediate divers who want a mix of marine life and scenery without extreme demands. Photographers will find plenty to frame, and buddy pairs can explore comfortably once briefed. Those new to the area should dive with a local centre to make the most of conditions and site knowledge.
