    Site Overview

The White Tower Reef is a gentle, shallow urban dive along the Thessaloniki waterfront, where the rocky seabed below the city’s landmark tower holds a busy community of macro life. The site rolls from the shoreline to about 14 m, crossing rock and sand that support morays, octopus and a kaleidoscope of nudibranchs. The sheltered Thermaic Gulf keeps conditions forgiving for new divers, while the lower visibility makes it a good place to practise buoyancy and skills without distraction. It is where many northern Greek divers take their first breaths and where experienced divers return for an easy, low-stress dive close to the city. Quiet and unpretentious, the White Tower Reef is the gentle flip-side of the region’s walls and wrecks. White Tower Reef (Thessaloniki) sits within Mainland – Northern Greece (Macedonia & Thrace) and is best described as a reef and training dive. The water here is typically clear, and the profile — from around 2 m down to 14 m — gives beginner divers a rewarding range of routes. Among the life you can expect are Mediterranean Moray, Common Octopus, Wrasse, Nudibranch, Sea Urchin. The site rewards a slow, observant approach, and good buoyancy keeps both diver and reef safe. With sensible planning around weather and boats, it ranks among the more memorable stops on a Greek diving trip.

    Dive Briefing

"The group kits up at the waterfront and wades in, gaining buoyancy before descending to the sloping reef at 3–6 m. The guide leads a slow tour, pointing out morays and nudibranchs and reminding divers to keep fins up to avoid silting the sand. With a maximum depth of 14 m the dive is long and relaxed, ideal for skills practice or macro photography. The ascent and exit are made back to the shore, where kit is rinsed. Buoyancy over the sand is the key skill. On the day, the guide runs a full briefing covering entry, descent line, depth limits and the turn point. Divers follow the plan at a relaxed pace, keeping close to the group and watching depth and gas. The route makes the most of the reef and training features while staying within no-decompression limits. A safety stop in the shallows rounds off the dive before a controlled ascent and DSMB deployment if needed."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

The White Tower Reef is perfect for beginners, training dives and discover-scuba experiences, with an easy shore entry and a maximum depth of only 14 m. It is also a favourite of macro photographers and anyone who prefers small subjects to big walls. Because it is shallow and sheltered, it suits nervous divers and children building confidence. Experienced divers use it as a relaxing dive between more demanding sites. It is a good choice for beginner divers who want a mix of marine life and scenery without extreme demands. Photographers will find plenty to frame, and buddy pairs can explore comfortably once briefed. Those new to the area should dive with a local centre to make the most of conditions and site knowledge.
