    Site Overview

The Hana (also known locally as the Sofia) is a small freighter resting on the sandy seabed off Chania at a friendly 15–22 m that makes it one of west Crete’s most accessible wreck dives. The compact hull has become a haven for macro life: morays peer from the portholes, octopus slip from the openings, and nudibranchs freckle the algae-covered plates. Although penetration is not encouraged, swimming the bright outer decks gives a sense of the vessel without the risks of enclosed spaces. For divers based in Chania, the Hana is a satisfying, easy wreck that combines a little history with abundant small life, and the clear Cretan water makes the hull easy to appreciate. It is a favourite of macro photographers and of anyone wanting a relaxed wreck experience close to the city. Wreck of the Hana / Sofia (Chania) sits within Crete (North Coast) and is best described as a wreck and macro dive. The water here is typically clear, and the profile — from around 12 m down to 22 m — gives beginner divers a rewarding range of routes. Among the life you can expect are Mediterranean Moray, Common Octopus, Nudibranch, Anthias, Wrasse. The site rewards a slow, observant approach, and good buoyancy keeps both diver and reef safe. With sensible planning around weather and boats, it ranks among the more memorable stops on a Greek diving trip.

    Dive Briefing

"The boat anchors uptide of the wreck and the group descends along the shot line to the hull. The guide circles the outside first, pointing out morays and octopus, before allowing pairs to swim the open decks with a torch. Penetration beyond the bright doorway sections is prohibited. Divers maintain a slow pace and keep clear of sharp edges. The ascent follows the line with a three-minute stop, and a DSMB is deployed before surfacing. The dive ends with a careful ladder re-entry. On the day, the guide runs a full briefing covering entry, descent line, depth limits and the turn point. Divers follow the plan at a relaxed pace, keeping close to the group and watching depth and gas. The route makes the most of the wreck and macro features while staying within no-decompression limits. A safety stop in the shallows rounds off the dive before a controlled ascent and DSMB deployment if needed."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

The Hana suits Open Water divers and above, with a max depth of 22 m and forgiving conditions. It is also rewarding for macro photographers, thanks to the morays and nudibranchs, and for anyone interested in small wrecks. Good buoyancy is important near the hull, and beginners build confidence here. Experienced divers use it as a relaxed dive between more demanding sites. It is a good choice for beginner divers who want a mix of marine life and scenery without extreme demands. Photographers will find plenty to frame, and buddy pairs can explore comfortably once briefed. Those new to the area should dive with a local centre to make the most of conditions and site knowledge.
