    Site Overview

Dragon Bay is one of the original Grenada wall dives: a ridgeline of dark volcanic rock rising from a sandy bottom in deep channels, with the reef top cruising at recreation depth and the sand far below. The rock formations themselves are the headliner — spires, channels and overhangs furred in coral and cupping sponges, with the whole ridge marching down toward Molinere. Reef-top swimming sits 8-18 m with descents into the channels to 28 m for advanced divers; the shallow route along the crest is genuinely beginner-friendly. The site sits in Southwest Coast (Caribbean Side), one of Grenada's core dive areas, with water at 27-29 °C and typical visibility of 15-25 m. The site is fully sheltered in normal conditions and lies within easy reach of every St George's-area operator. Grenada's volcanic bones show better here than almost anywhere in the Caribbean — a dark-rock ridge alive with reef colour, and a no-brainer early dive. Trade winds blow almost constant over the Caribbean, and it is their lulls and builds that set the daily diving schedule around Grenada. Water temperature stays in the high twenties year-round and the island sits outside the main hurricane belt, so the dive boats run twelve months a year.

    Dive Briefing

“Drop on the ridge and travel along the crest, ducking into channels as interest takes you; the route runs predictably toward Molinere with a boat pick-up at the far end. Depth management: plan the dive to a maximum of 28 metres and turn early. The sheltered Caribbean side is usually glassy, while the Atlantic-facing south coast runs with the trade-wind current that makes its drift dives so special. Ascend stepwise up the last coral head, safety stop in the shallows over the sand patch. Newer divers can comfortably dive this site, staying within the range flagged by the guide. Several of Grenada's best waters are protected - the Grand Anse Marine Protected Area, the south-coast preserves and Carriacou's Sandy Island/Oyster Bed MPA all use mooring buoys and small user fees to keep anchors off the coral. Local operators hold the final say on which sites run each day, because a shift in wind or swell can change conditions between two bays.”

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

This is the site where Open Water divers learn to love depth — the crest keeps everything easy while the channels tempt experienced divers down the wall. The 8-28 m range suits divers of most certification levels. Advanced groups can push the sand edges; everyone can enjoy the same rock sculpture from the top. The crevices, wreck rooms and sculpture plinths hold the usual Caribbean small life - damsels, blennies, shrimps and the occasional rare frogfish or black seahorse. Night dives on the shallow reefs and harbour wrecks turn up a completely different community of hunters.

    For Non-Divers

St. George's is easy to enjoy without a cylinder, and most operators run snorkel trips on the same bays. Several of Grenada's best waters are protected - the Grand Anse Marine Protected Area, the south-coast preserves and Carriacou's Sandy Island/Oyster Bed MPA all use mooring buoys and small user fees to keep anchors off the coral.
