    Site Overview

Flamingo Bay is famed among local divers as the most fish-loaded water on Grenada: a shallow reef embayment that edges into a wall dropping to 21 m, and every inch of it is crowded. Dense shoals of purple Creole wrasse, yellow-gold chromis and grunts hover over the coral heads in numbers that never quite thin out, with big groupers posted on the wall ledge. Most of the action lives between 5 and 15 m on the reef, so the wall is optional — the mid-depths carry the clouds and the air stays comfortable. The site sits in Southwest Coast (Caribbean Side), one of Grenada's core dive areas, with water at 27-29 °C and typical visibility of 15-25 m. It sits on the open Caribbean side north of St George's — boats can run to the deeper sites first if the afternoon trade-wind chop builds. Few Caribbean sites deliver plain fish-count density this reliably, and Flamingo's is why locals claim the best wall snorkelling-to-deeper-diving transition on the island. Trade winds blow almost constant over the Caribbean, and it is their lulls and builds that set the daily diving schedule around Grenada. Water temperature stays in the high twenties year-round and the island sits outside the main hurricane belt, so the dive boats run twelve months a year.

    Dive Briefing

“Anchor over the reef and drift gently along the wall margin; stay shallow where the shoals are thickest, then edge down to the ledges if your air and comfort allow. Depth management: plan the dive to a maximum of 21 metres and turn early. The sheltered Caribbean side is usually glassy, while the Atlantic-facing south coast runs with the trade-wind current that makes its drift dives so special. Ascend in stages up the wall or retrace the reef, safety-stopping off a coral head away from the anchor line. Newer divers can comfortably dive this site, staying within the range flagged by the guide. Several of Grenada's best waters are protected - the Grand Anse Marine Protected Area, the south-coast preserves and Carriacou's Sandy Island/Oyster Bed MPA all use mooring buoys and small user fees to keep anchors off the coral. Local operators hold the final say on which sites run each day, because a shift in wind or swell can change conditions between two bays.”

    Safety & Hazards

    • Anchor lines in the bay — note the boat before descending
    • Afternoon trade-wind chop making the surface rough
    • Wall dives pulling past 18 m for less-experienced divers
    • Fire coral on the shallower reef heads
    • Heavy surface UV on a clear calm day

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Fish-lovers and macro shooters will stay an entire dive in the top 10 m here; the site is relaxed enough for Open Water divers and rewarding for veterans. The 5-21 m range suits divers of most certification levels. Pair it with nearby Happy Hill for a two-tank day on the same reef system. The crevices, wreck rooms and sculpture plinths hold the usual Caribbean small life - damsels, blennies, shrimps and the occasional rare frogfish or black seahorse. Night dives on the shallow reefs and harbour wrecks turn up a completely different community of hunters.

    For Non-Divers

Gouyave is easy to enjoy without a cylinder, and most operators run snorkel trips on the same bays. Several of Grenada's best waters are protected - the Grand Anse Marine Protected Area, the south-coast preserves and Carriacou's Sandy Island/Oyster Bed MPA all use mooring buoys and small user fees to keep anchors off the coral.
