Grand Mal Wall - Southwest Coast (Caribbean Side), Grenada
Site Overview
Grand Mal is the deep end of the southwest coast: the shelf simply stops, and a sunlit wall drops away into blue water past 30 m, its face broken by ledges, pinnacles and a heavy drape of purple sea fans. The downscape view off the wall edge is the signature — glide along the lip and watch the reef fall away into darkness, with grunts and snapper swirling at the wall and bigger fish cruising the blue. Recreational routes hug the 15-25 m band along the ledges; the wall itself continues far beyond diving limits, which is exactly the point. The site sits in Southwest Coast (Caribbean Side), one of Grenada's core dive areas, with water at 27-29 °C and typical visibility of 15-25 m. North of St George's on the open Caribbean side — boats time the run around the trade-wind chop. Every Caribbean coast needs its proper wall, and Grand Mal is Grenada's answer — clean vertical blue a stone's throw from the harbour. Trade winds blow almost constant over the Caribbean, and it is their lulls and builds that set the daily diving schedule around Grenada. Water temperature stays in the high twenties year-round and the island sits outside the main hurricane belt, so the dive boats run twelve months a year.
Dive Briefing
“Descend to the shelf edge and travel along the wall keeping one fin on the reef; the guide sets a maximum depth line and the group works the ledges and pinnacle bases within it. Depth management: plan the dive to a maximum of 30 metres and turn early. The sheltered Caribbean side is usually glassy, while the Atlantic-facing south coast runs with the trade-wind current that makes its drift dives so special. Ascend along the wall in stages — the shallow reef returns at 12 m for a long, scenic safety stop. This is an advanced-profile dive; newer divers should stay on the sheltered route and let the guide handle the deep line. Several of Grenada's best waters are protected - the Grand Anse Marine Protected Area, the south-coast preserves and Carriacou's Sandy Island/Oyster Bed MPA all use mooring buoys and small user fees to keep anchors off the coral. Local operators hold the final say on which sites run each day, because a shift in wind or swell can change conditions between two bays.”

Safety & Hazards

- Downwelling and surge along the wall face in wind
- Narcosis effects at depth on air
- Surface chop on the exposed Caribbean side
- Solo drift away from the boat on wall transects
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Confident divers who love walls and downscape shots get their fill here; the depth and the blue make this an advanced-profile dive. The 8-30 m range suits experienced divers comfortable beyond 18 m and in moving water. Newer divers can still enjoy the reef top, but the wall experience belongs to those comfortable at 25-30 m. The crevices, wreck rooms and sculpture plinths hold the usual Caribbean small life - damsels, blennies, shrimps and the occasional rare frogfish or black seahorse. Night dives on the shallow reefs and harbour wrecks turn up a completely different community of hunters.
For Non-Divers
Gouyave is easy to enjoy without a cylinder, and most operators run snorkel trips on the same bays. Several of Grenada's best waters are protected - the Grand Anse Marine Protected Area, the south-coast preserves and Carriacou's Sandy Island/Oyster Bed MPA all use mooring buoys and small user fees to keep anchors off the coral.
