Shark Reef - South Coast (Atlantic Side), Grenada
Site Overview
Shark Reef sits where the Atlantic hits Grenada's south coast, and the whole site is built around that energy: a strong, reliable current runs over reef bommies where southern stingrays graze, nurse sharks pile into the sheltered hollows and spotted eagle rays swim the flow. The nurse shark nursery is the headline — grown sharks and youngsters stacked in the sandy hollows — with eagle rays cruising past at eye level and constant pelagic traffic along the reef edge. The drift runs at 10-20 m the whole way; you will not drop below 20 m because the current will not let you linger. The site sits in South Coast (Atlantic Side), one of Grenada's core dive areas, with water at 27-29 °C and typical visibility of 15-25 m. On the Atlantic side of the south coast — boats reach it from both southwest and east-side bases; the crossing teaches you the day's weather fast. A true current dive with a payoff ecosystem to match — this is why Grenada's south coast is on every experienced Caribbean diver's list. Trade winds blow almost constant over the Caribbean, and it is their lulls and builds that set the daily diving schedule around Grenada. Water temperature stays in the high twenties year-round and the island sits outside the main hurricane belt, so the dive boats run twelve months a year.
Dive Briefing
“The boat ducks up-current, everyone rolls backward and hooks into the flow; stay low to the reef, use the bommies as shelter and let the Atlantic do the swimming for a one-way 25-40 minute drift to the pickup. Depth management: plan the dive to a maximum of 20 metres and turn early. The sheltered Caribbean side is usually glassy, while the Atlantic-facing south coast runs with the trade-wind current that makes its drift dives so special. Surface into the pickup zone with your SMB up — the boat crew are working hard on a current day. This is an advanced-profile dive; newer divers should stay on the sheltered route and let the guide handle the deep line. Several of Grenada's best waters are protected - the Grand Anse Marine Protected Area, the south-coast preserves and Carriacou's Sandy Island/Oyster Bed MPA all use mooring buoys and small user fees to keep anchors off the coral. Local operators hold the final say on which sites run each day, because a shift in wind or swell can change conditions between two bays.”

- Strong current — weak divers get separated fast
- One-way drift far from the moored boat
- Surface pickup in open Atlantic swell
- Rapid depth gain trying to shelter from the flow
- Cooler thermoclines near the reef edge
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
This is an advanced dive, current in every sense: divers comfortable in moving water and happy with a no-decompression drift get the most biologically exciting dive on the island. The 10-20 m range suits experienced divers comfortable beyond 18 m and in moving water. Confidence in your own buoyancy and a good exit plan matter more here than raw air consumption. The crevices, wreck rooms and sculpture plinths hold the usual Caribbean small life - damsels, blennies, shrimps and the occasional rare frogfish or black seahorse. Night dives on the shallow reefs and harbour wrecks turn up a completely different community of hunters.
For Non-Divers
St David's is easy to enjoy without a cylinder, and most operators run snorkel trips on the same bays. Several of Grenada's best waters are protected - the Grand Anse Marine Protected Area, the south-coast preserves and Carriacou's Sandy Island/Oyster Bed MPA all use mooring buoys and small user fees to keep anchors off the coral.
