Site Overview

Double Reef is a rare double-barrier reef system off the northwest coast of Guam that represents one of the most pristine and less-dived marine environments in the western Pacific. The unique geological formation consists of two parallel barrier reefs separated by a shallow lagoon, creating two distinct diving environments within a single site. The outer wall faces the open ocean and drops sheerly to depths beyond 35 metres, where schooling jacks, tuna, grey reef sharks, and occasional manta rays patrol the clear blue water. The inner lagoon provides calm, protected conditions ideal for macro diving, with seahorses, pipefish, nudibranchs, and juvenile fish inhabiting the coral gardens and sandy patches. The pristine condition of the reef reflects its remote location and limited dive traffic, with coral coverage and fish biomass levels significantly higher than more frequently visited sites closer to the main tourist areas. The double barrier formation is geologically unusual and provides fascinating insights into reef development and the effects of sea level changes over thousands of years. The site offers the rare opportunity to experience both adrenaline-filled pelagic diving on the outer wall and peaceful macro exploration in the protected lagoon during a single boat trip. The dual reef structure creates unique current patterns that concentrate plankton and attract filter-feeding organisms to both the outer and inner reef surfaces, supporting biodiversity levels that exceed single barrier reef systems in the region.
