Hap's Reef – Hap's Reef & East Agana

Site Overview

Hap's Reef is a large offshore reef system on Guam's east coast that boasts some of the most prolific coral growth on the island, with massive table acroporas spanning over two metres in diameter and extensive staghorn thickets creating an underwater forest landscape. The reef is famous for its clownfish colonies, where dozens of anemonefish tend their hosts in what divers affectionately call clownfish cities, providing exceptional photography subjects at comfortable depths. The coral diversity at Hap's Reef is among the highest recorded on Guam, with over sixty species of hard coral identified across the reef system. Moray eels inhabit the numerous crevices and overhangs throughout the reef, while passing eagle rays cruise overhead during the dry season. The site is also known for occasional manta ray cleaning station activity, where reef manta rays visit specific coral bommies to have parasites removed by small cleaner wrasses. This spectacular behaviour provides divers with unforgettable close encounters with these gentle giants. The gentle slope and clear water make Hap's Reef suitable for divers of various experience levels, while the biodiversity ensures rewarding encounters on every visit. The reef system supports an estimated fish biomass significantly higher than comparable reef sites on Guam, reflecting the healthy ecological balance and the effectiveness of sustainable diving practices adopted by the local operator community over several decades.
