Netrani South - Karnataka Pelagic Diving
Site Overview
Netrani South is an exposed reef slope on the southern side of Netrani Island offering deeper profiles with consistent pelagic encounters including eagle rays, barracuda schools, and hunting trevally in the current flow. The site descends from 5 to 20 metres along a rocky slope with coral-encrusted outcrops providing habitat for diverse reef fish populations. Grouper rest on ledges while hawksbill turtles occasionally visit the reef face feeding on sponges and invertebrates. The exposed southern position attracts larger marine species from the open Arabian Sea creating more frequent pelagic encounters than the sheltered northern sites. This site represents the most adventurous reef diving available at Netrani combining depth, current, and big-fish encounters in accessible west coast conditions. The southern exposure means that larger pelagic species from the open Arabian Sea regularly pass through creating more frequent big-fish encounters than any other dive site at Netrani Island throughout the diving season. The exposed southern position on Netrani Island means that oceanic currents bring nutrient-rich water supporting the entire marine food chain from plankton through baitfish to apex predators creating the most exciting diving available in Karnataka. The exposed position creates the most dynamic and adrenaline-filled diving experience available at Netrani Island where big-fish encounters are a regular occurrence throughout the Karnataka diving season.
Dive Briefing
"The dive boat crosses from Murudeshwar to Netrani Island's southern reef taking approximately 15 minutes. Descend along the reef slope from 5 metres to the planned maximum depth following the rocky formations downward. Swim along the slope observing grouper on ledges and barracuda schools patrolling the water column above. Position yourself near the reef edge for viewing eagle rays and trevally passing in the blue water during current periods. Hawksbill turtles may appear feeding on the rocky reef face at any point during the dive. The moderate current creates drift conditions carrying you along the reef slope. Ascend along the reef crest completing safety stops on the shallow formations. The return crossing allows time to review pelagic photography and discuss the hunting behaviours of eagle rays and barracuda observed during the exposed reef slope dive. The return boat ride allows time to review pelagic photography and plan subsequent dives at the caves and northern reef for a complete Netrani Island exploration."
