Site Overview

Papanasam Reef at Varkala is a shallow rocky reef formed on the unique laterite cliff formations that characterise Kerala's famous cliff coastline. The reef flat extends from 2 to 12 metres with laterite rock outcrops hosting parrotfish, damselfish, and moray eels in the rocky crevices. Sea urchins populate the rocky substrate while octopus conceal themselves in narrow crevices between the laterite formations. The shallow protected conditions make this an ideal training and introductory dive site for the growing diving community at Varkala.
