Site Overview

Red Hills at Pondicherry is a productive rocky reef slope featuring iron-rich laterite rock formations that give the site its distinctive reddish colouration visible both above and below the water surface. The reef descends from 5 to 18 metres along a gentle slope with rocky outcrops hosting parrotfish, butterflyfish, and lionfish among the coral-encrusted rock surfaces. Moray eels inhabit the rocky crevices while stingrays rest on sandy patches between the laterite formations. The mild current creates gentle drift diving conditions allowing efficient coverage of the reef slope during the dive. Red Hills offers a unique geological diving experience combining the distinctive reddish laterite substrate with diverse marine communities on India's east coast creating visual compositions unavailable at other Pondicherry dive sites.
