Shelter Cove at Grand Island is Goa's most accessible beginner-friendly dive site offering shallow protected waters with abundant marine life on rocky reef formations. The cove features a gentle reef slope descending from 3 to 14 metres with rocky outcrops hosting parrotfish, butterflyfish, and occasional seahorse sightings rewarding patient observers. Cuttlefish patrol the reef face displaying their remarkable colour-changing abilities while octopus hide in rocky crevices between dives. The protected position shields divers from ocean swell and strong currents creating ideal training conditions for new divers completing their open water certification. Snorkelers enjoy equal access to the marine life from the surface making Shelter Cove the most versatile introductory dive site in Goa. The cove's position within Grand Island's protected lee means that diving conditions remain reliable even when outer sites are affected by weather making this the most consistently accessible dive location in the entire Goa diving programme. Dive Briefing

"Board the dive boat from Grand Island harbour for the short 15-minute crossing to the sheltered cove. Enter the water from the boat into calm shallow conditions with the rocky reef visible below at approximately 8 metres. Swim along the reef slope observing parrotfish grazing on algae and butterflyfish hovering around coral formations. Navigate to rocky outcrops where cuttlefish display colour changes and octopus conceal themselves in narrow crevices. Patient observers may spot seahorses clinging to sea fans on the deeper sections. The shallow depth provides extended bottom times of 50 minutes or more. Ascend directly to the boat through calm protected waters. The return journey across the calm lagoon offers opportunities to observe marine life from the surface while reviewing dive photographs and discussing species identification with your guide. The return crossing provides time to review photographs and plan subsequent dives at deeper Grand Island sites building progressively on the skills developed here."
