Site Overview

The Cave at Kavaratti is a spectacular underwater cavern system formed in the outer reef rock structure offering adventurous divers a unique overhead environment experience. Sunlight filters through the cave entrance creating dramatic light beams that illuminate schools of sweepers and cardinalfish sheltering inside. The cave extends approximately 15 metres into the reef with sufficient headroom for comfortable exploration using torch illumination. Lobsters and squirrelfish inhabit the darker recesses while the cave entrance reef hosts hawksbill turtles and colourful reef fish. This site combines geological interest with marine biology observation in one of Lakshadweep's most photogenic underwater environments. The cavern system was formed by ancient wave action eroding the reef limestone creating smooth passages and chambers that now serve as shelter for numerous nocturnal marine species. The geological formations combined with vibrant coral growth on the cave ceiling create an otherworldly underwater landscape unlike any other dive site in the Lakshadweep archipelago. The geological history recorded in the cave formations provides fascinating insight into the ancient processes that shaped the Lakshadweep atolls millions of years before coral organisms colonised the submerged rock structures. Scientific studies of the cave ecosystem have revealed unique invertebrate communities adapted to the low-light conditions providing valuable insight into how marine organisms evolve in specialised overhead environments.

Dive Briefing

"The dive boat positions above the reef crest where the cave entrance is visible at approximately 8 metres depth. Descend to the cave mouth which faces the current direction making entry straightforward. Swim into the main chamber where torch light reveals the full extent of the cavern ceiling covered in colourful invertebrates. Explore the side passages briefly before returning to the main chamber for photography opportunities using the natural light beams. Exit the cave and spend remaining bottom time on the adjacent reef slope rich with coral formations and turtle sightings. Ascend along the reef crest completing safety stops in open water. The cave interior hosts a distinct community of nocturnal species including squirrelfish, cardinalfish, and lobsters that retreat to the darkness during daylight hours. Your torch will reveal the true colours of these light-sensitive creatures as well as the spectacular invertebrate growth covering every surface of the cavern ceiling and walls."
