Site Overview

Uma Guma Reef is a productive reef slope off Grand Island featuring healthy rocky reef formations with moderate coral coverage supporting diverse fish populations and occasional visits from larger marine species. The site descends from 5 to 16 metres along a gentle slope with rocky outcrops hosting angelfish, parrotfish, and moray eels in the crevices. Stingrays rest on sandy patches between the rocky formations while well-camouflaged scorpionfish blend into the rocky substrate challenging observers to spot them. The mild current creates gentle drift diving conditions allowing divers to cover more reef area while expending minimal energy. This site offers a balanced diving experience combining reef exploration with marine life observation in accessible conditions suitable for divers with open water certification and some diving experience. The reef slope's position on Grand Island's sheltered side means that conditions remain diveable throughout most of the season providing consistent access to productive reef environments for the local diving community. The gentle slope profile allows divers to gradually descend through different depth zones observing changes in species composition and coral growth patterns as light levels decrease with increasing depth along the reef. The diverse depth zones and marine communities make this an excellent site for multi-level dive profiles allowing observation of different species assemblages at various depths along the productive reef slope.

Dive Briefing

"The dive boat departs from Grand Island area for the 20-minute crossing to the reef slope. Descend to the reef crest at approximately 5 metres and follow the slope downward along the current direction. Swim over rocky outcrops observing angelfish displaying territorial behaviour and parrotfish grazing on the algae-covered rock surfaces. Navigate to sandy patches where stingrays rest between foraging excursions on the reef. Watch for camouflaged scorpionfish on rocky ledges as their excellent disguise makes them difficult to spot without careful observation. The gentle drift carries you along approximately 200 metres of reef slope. Ascend along the reef crest completing safety stops on the shallow rocky formations. The return boat ride allows time to review reef photography and discuss the diverse marine species observed during the drift dive along the productive Grand Island reef slope. The return crossing provides time to review reef photography and plan subsequent dives at Sail Rock and the wall for a comprehensive Grand Island exploration."
