Diving & Travel Guide to the Mentawai Islands & Sumatra West Coast
Regional Overview
The Mentawai Islands and the Sumatran west coast represent one of the last great frontiers for surf-inspired diving adventures in Indonesia, a chain of volcanic islands lying 150 kilometers off the Sumatran coast in the Indian Ocean that are world-famous for their perfect waves and increasingly recognized for their exceptional underwater biodiversity. The main islands of Siberut, Sipora, North Pagai, and South Pagai are surrounded by extensive reef systems that benefit from the powerful Indian Ocean swells, creating dramatic underwater landscapes of bommies, channels, and vertical walls covered in pristine corals. The diving here is characterized by the same raw, powerful conditions that attract the world's best surfers, with strong currents and surge creating exhilarating drift dives along reef walls and through bommie fields teeming with schooling fish, reef sharks, and occasional oceanic visitors. The Mentawai Islands are home to one of the most unique indigenous cultures in Indonesia, with the Mentawai people maintaining their animist beliefs and traditional practices including the distinctive tattoo art and communal longhouse living that have remained unchanged for thousands of years. The marine environment supports an impressive diversity of species including regular encounters with grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, schooling barracuda and trevally, and during certain seasons, oceanic manta rays and whale sharks passing through the deep channels between islands. The region's isolation has preserved both the terrestrial and marine ecosystems in near-pristine condition, and the growing liveaboard and surf-charter industry provides increasingly sophisticated access to the remote dive sites while maintaining the wild, adventurous atmosphere that defines the Mentawai experience. For the diver seeking a combination of world-class reef diving and genuine cultural adventure far from the tourist trail, the Mentawais deliver an unforgettable experience.
Getting There
The Mentawai Islands are accessed via Minangkabau International Airport (PDG) in Padang, West Sumatra, with connecting flights from Jakarta and other Indonesian cities. From Padang, fast ferries and overnight ferries connect to the main islands of Sipora and Siberut, with the fast ferry taking approximately 3-4 hours. Several charter boat operators and surf charters also depart directly from Padang, offering multi-day liveaboard-style trips to the best dive sites across the island chain. The Mentawai Islands are also accessible from the Batu Islands to the north via charter boats, and some operators offer combined itineraries covering both island groups.
Food & Drink
The Mentawai Islands offer simple island cuisine with strong Minangkabau influences from the Sumatran mainland. Fresh seafood is the daily staple, with fish caught by local fishermen providing the basis for meals prepared with coconut, chili, and aromatic herbs. The signature Minangkabau dishes, including Rendang and Gulai, are available in the main towns, though on the more remote islands the cuisine is simpler and more focused on basic rice and fish preparations. The liveaboard and surf charter boats typically offer more varied menus with international and Indonesian options. The islands produce their own coconuts, sago, and tropical fruits, which complement the seafood-based diet of the local communities.
