Alor: Anemone City Dive Site – Alor Archipelago
Site Overview
Anemone City is a celebrated reef site located approximately 25 minutes by boat from Kalabahi harbor, named for its extraordinary density of sea anemones covering the reef slope like an underwater metropolis. The site features a gentle coral slope descending from 2 meters to approximately 20 meters, blanketed in carpet anemones, bubble-tip anemones, and adhesive anemones in densities rarely seen elsewhere in the Coral Triangle. The shallower sections at 2 to 8 meters are the primary attraction, featuring vast carpets of anemones hosting multiple species of anemonefish including Clark's, pink skunk, and saddleback anemonefish. The anemone coverage is so dense that it creates a surreal underwater landscape of undulating tentacles in every direction. The coral slope at 8 to 14 meters transitions to diverse hard corals with staghorn, plate, and brain coral formations. Schools of fusiliers, damselfish, and anthias move through the water column. Hawksbill turtles are regular visitors. The bommies at 10 to 16 meters host moray eels, lionfish, and scorpionfish. Blue-spotted stingrays inhabit the sandy patches. The deeper sections at 14 to 20 meters feature nudibranchs and flatworms on the reef substrate. Anemone City is best dived from April through November during the dry season. The site is a photographer's dream, offering both wide-angle opportunities of the anemone carpets and macro shots of anemonefish behavior. The site is consistently rated among the most photogenic dive sites in the Alor Archipelago and is a highlight of any Alor diving trip.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a controlled descent from the boat directly onto the upper anemone slope at a depth of approximately 2 to 4 meters. Immediately upon descent, you are greeted by the breathtaking sight of an endless carpet of sea anemones. Your guide will lead you on a slow drift along the gentle slope, where you can observe multiple species of anemonefish darting defensively among the stinging tentacles. The anemone coverage is most concentrated between 3 and 8 meters, creating a surreal underwater cityscape that seems to undulate with the slight ocean swell. As you descend further to the coral slope at 8 to 12 meters, the topography transitions to a mix of hard corals, where large schools of fusiliers and damselfish provide constant motion in the water column. Keep a sharp eye out for hawksbill turtles that are frequently seen foraging along the reef edge. The scattered coral bommies at 10 to 16 meters provide shelter for moray eels, resting lionfish, and well-camouflaged scorpionfish. Your guide will eventually lead you back to the shallow anemone slope at 3 to 5 meters for your safety stop, allowing for a final, close-up look at the colorful colonies and their resident fish before surfacing."

Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Anemone City is an ideal site for divers of all experience levels, ranging from newly certified Open Water beginners to seasoned professionals and dedicated underwater photographers. The exceptionally mild conditions, characterized by minimal current and excellent visibility, make it a perfect location for those looking for a relaxed and stress-free dive. Photographers, in particular, will find this site to be a world-class destination for both wide-angle reef scenes and intricate macro behavior shots of anemonefish and their symbiotic hosts. It is also an outstanding choice for families and non-diving companions, as the most spectacular features of the site are located in very shallow water, making it one of the premier snorkeling spots in the entire Alor Archipelago.
