Alor: Babylon Dive Site – Alor Archipelago
Site Overview
Babylon is a breathtaking reef site in the Alor-Pantar strait, renowned for its cascading terraces of soft corals and sea fans that drape the steep volcanic slope like an underwater hanging garden. The site occupies a unique position where the powerful strait current slows and creates eddies, trapping nutrients that fuel extraordinary coral growth at every depth level. The reef descends from 4 meters to 32 meters in a series of dramatic terraces, with each level hosting a distinct community of marine organisms. The shallow terraces are blanketed in pristine hard corals including massive table corals and colorful Montipora colonies, while the mid-depth sections at 10 to 20 meters are smothered in dense soft corals, gorgonian fans, and barrel sponges. Resident hawksbill turtles forage across the reef, Napoleon wrasse cruise along the terraces, and pygmy seahorses cling to the gorgonian fans. The deeper sandy ledges at 20 to 32 meters harbor garden eels, mantis shrimp, and a variety of rare critters that make Babylon a paradise for both wide-angle and macro photographers. The moderate current makes the site accessible to intermediate divers while still delivering the biodiversity and coral density that Alor is famous for throughout the entire diving world.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent onto the shallow reef crest at 4 to 6 meters, where the first terrace reveals a stunning panorama of table corals and staghorn formations stretching into the blue. Your guide leads you along the slope in the direction of the moderate current, descending gradually through the terraces. At 10 to 15 meters, the reef transforms into a lush garden of soft corals and gorgonian fans, where you should examine the sea fans closely for pygmy seahorses. Hawksbill turtles are frequently encountered foraging on the reef structure at these depths. Continuing deeper to 18 to 25 meters, you reach the dramatic hanging garden section where massive sea fans and soft corals cascade over limestone ledges. Napoleon wrasse cruise along this section, and whitetip reef sharks may be spotted resting on sandy patches between the coral outcrops. At 25 to 32 meters, the sandy ledges and rubble zones host an entirely different ecosystem of garden eels, mantis shrimp, and cryptic critters. Your guide signals the ascent, and you work your way back up through the terraces, spending the final minutes at 5 to 8 meters where the shallow coral garden is spectacular. The safety stop is conducted along the upper slope before surfacing near the boat."

Safety & Hazards
- Moderate current along the exposed slope requiring drift diving technique
- Fire coral on the shallow reef flat requiring careful buoyancy during ascent
- Sea urchins on the rubble patches and rocky sections
- Deeper sections at 25 to 32 meters requiring strict depth and air monitoring
- Boat traffic on the surface in the active Alor-Pantar strait
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Babylon is an excellent choice for intermediate divers with Advanced Open Water certification and at least 25 logged dives. The moderate current and terraced slope profile make the site more accessible than some of Alor's more challenging drift dives, while still delivering world-class coral scenery and marine life encounters. Macro photographers will be thrilled by the pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and rare critters found throughout the site. Wide-angle shooters will find the terraced coral gardens and hanging soft corals provide stunning compositions. The site is also suitable for advanced divers who want a more relaxed dive profile after tackling Alor's stronger current sites. Good buoyancy control is essential to avoid damaging the fragile coral terraces, particularly on the shallower sections.
