Alor: Cathedral Dive Site – Alor Archipelago
Site Overview
Cathedral is one of Alor's most spectacular and dramatic dive sites, featuring enormous limestone caverns and swim-through archways that give the site its evocative name. Located along the steep volcanic wall on the western side of the Alor-Pantar strait, the site benefits from powerful tidal currents that deliver a constant supply of nutrients, sustaining extraordinary coral growth across every surface. The main attraction is a series of large caverns at 12 to 20 meters depth, where sunlight filtering through multiple openings in the rock ceiling creates breathtaking shafts of golden light that illuminate dense forests of soft corals and gorgonian sea fans. The walls outside the caverns drop from 5 meters to well beyond 35 meters, covered in vibrant hard and soft corals that support an astonishing density of marine life. Grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks patrol the deeper sections, while schools of barracuda, eagle rays, Napoleon wrasse, and bumphead parrotfish are regularly encountered cruising along the wall face. The shallower reef gardens at 5 to 12 meters are a kaleidoscope of color, with dense schools of anthias, fusiliers, and butterflyfish swirling around massive table corals and staghorn formations. Inside the caverns, divers can find resting whitetip sharks, lobsters, moray eels, and a variety of crustaceans sheltering in the dark crevices. The site is best dived during slack tide windows from April through November when visibility reaches 25 to 35 meters and the morning sunlight creates the most spectacular light displays inside the caverns.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent from the boat onto the reef crest at approximately 5 meters, where your guide assesses the current direction and strength. You will swim along the wall in the direction of the current, reaching the first major cavern opening at approximately 14 meters depth. The cavern extends roughly 15 meters into the rock, with multiple light shafts penetrating through openings in the ceiling at 8 to 12 meters. The sunlight creates a stunning natural cathedral effect as it illuminates the coral-encrusted walls. Swimming through the main cavern, you exit through a second opening onto the exposed wall at 18 meters. Your guide continues along the wall to a second series of smaller caverns and overhangs at 20 to 25 meters, where whitetip reef sharks are frequently found resting on sandy ledges. The deeper wall at 25 to 35 meters offers the best chance for pelagic encounters, with grey reef sharks and eagle rays patrolling the blue. As your bottom time and air supply dictate, your guide leads you back up to the shallower reef gardens at 8 to 12 meters for the final portion of the dive, where the coral diversity and fish density are outstanding. The safety stop is conducted along the upper wall at 5 meters before surfacing near the boat."

Safety & Hazards
- Strong channel currents that can sweep divers along the wall faster than expected
- Cavern environments with limited overhead access to the surface in certain sections
- Sharp limestone formations inside the caverns requiring careful finning and buoyancy
- Deep profile with significant nitrogen loading on the lower wall sections
- Boat traffic on the surface in the active strait between Alor and Pantar
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Cathedral is suited for advanced divers with solid buoyancy control and experience in overhead environments. While full cave certification is not required, the cavern sections demand confident air management and comfort swimming in partially enclosed spaces with limited direct access to the surface. The strong currents in the channel require divers to maintain situational awareness and follow their guide's instructions regarding positioning and depth. Intermediate divers with Advanced Open Water certification and at least 40 logged dives may attempt the site under the supervision of an experienced guide who can tailor the profile to avoid the deeper cavern sections. The site rewards experienced divers with a unique combination of geological drama, thriving coral ecosystems, and regular encounters with large marine species that make it one of Alor's most memorable dives.
