Alor: Current Alley Dive Site – Alor Archipelago
Site Overview
Alor: Current Alley is a remarkable dive site in the Alor-Pantar strait, situated where the powerful convergence of the Flores Sea and Banda Sea creates nutrient-rich upwellings that sustain extraordinary marine biodiversity. Current Alley is one of Alor's most adrenaline-pumping dive sites, where the powerful tidal flow between two islands creates a natural flume that concentrates marine life in spectacular densities. Giant trevally, barracuda, and grey reef sharks patrol the channel while the current-swept walls are encrusted with dense soft corals and sea fans. The site is accessed from Kalabahi by boat, typically 35 to 50 minutes depending on the specific location. The coral coverage is exceptional, with dense hard and soft corals covering every available surface from the shallows to the deeper sections. Resident marine species include turtles, Napoleon wrasse, and a variety of reef sharks, while visiting pelagics such as eagle rays, barracuda, and giant trevally add excitement to every dive. The Alor archipelago remains one of Indonesia's most remote and least-dived destinations, with underwater conditions that rival the more famous Raja Ampat and Komodo regions. The best diving conditions are from April through November during the dry season, when visibility reaches 25 to 30 meters and the seas are calmest.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent from the boat onto the reef crest at approximately 5 meters. This is a pure drift dive — you enter the water upstream and let the current carry you through the alley between the two islands. Your guide leads the group along the wall on the left side at 12 to 20 meters, where the current is slightly reduced. Giant trevally hunt in the flow, and grey reef sharks circle at the channel entrance. The dive ends at a shallow coral garden where the current dissipates. Your guide monitors the current throughout the dive and adjusts the route accordingly. The coral diversity at every depth level is outstanding, from massive table corals and staghorn formations in the shallows to dense soft corals and gorgonian fans on the deeper walls. The safety stop is conducted at 5 meters along the upper reef before returning to the boat. Total dive time is typically 50 to 60 minutes depending on air consumption and depth profile."

Safety & Hazards
- Moderate to strong current requiring drift diving techniques
- Deep profile sections requiring strict depth and air management
- Fire coral on the shallow reef flat requiring careful buoyancy
- Sea urchins on rocky sections and rubble patches
- Boat traffic on the surface in the active Alor-Pantar strait
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Current Alley is exclusively for experienced advanced divers with at least 50 logged dives and proven drift diving skills in strong current environments. The current can exceed 3 knots during spring tides, and the ability to deploy an SMB, maintain neutral buoyancy, and keep group cohesion in strong flow is absolutely essential. Divers must be comfortable with negative entries, drift diving procedures, and boat pickup in open water. The site is not suitable for inexperienced divers or those who are uncomfortable in high-energy environments. For those who meet the requirements, Current Alley offers one of the most adrenaline-pumping drift dives in all of Indonesia, with the current delivering a constant parade of large marine species directly past you as you glide along the wall.
