Alor: Kalabahi Bay – Clown Valley Dive Site – Alor Archipelago
Site Overview
Clown Valley is a popular reef site located in Kalabahi Bay approximately 15 minutes by boat from Kalabahi harbor, named for its extraordinary concentration of anemonefish colonies that inhabit the shallow reef slopes. The site features a gentle coral slope descending from 2 meters to approximately 18 meters, with extensive coral gardens, scattered bommies, and sandy patches. The shallower sections at 2 to 6 meters are the highlight, featuring dense colonies of Clark's anemonefish and pink skunk anemonefish inhabiting large carpet anemones on the reef flat. Multiple species coexist in this area, making it one of the best sites in the archipelago for anemonefish observation and photography. The coral slope at 6 to 12 meters features diverse hard corals with schools of fusiliers, damselfish, and anthias. Hawksbill turtles are regular visitors to the reef. The bommies at 10 to 16 meters host moray eels, lionfish, and scorpionfish. Blue-spotted stingrays and garden eels inhabit the sandy patches between reef formations. Clown Valley is best dived from April through November when the dry season provides optimal visibility. The site is popular with families, underwater photographers, and dive centers for afternoon and checkout dives. The anemonefish colonies in the shallows make it an excellent snorkeling site as well, and the shallow depth allows extended bottom time for observing and photographing the diverse anemonefish behavior.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a controlled descent from the boat onto the shallow, sun-drenched reef flat at approximately 2 to 4 meters, where the first thing you'll notice is the incredible density of large carpet anemones. These host vibrant colonies of Clark's and pink skunk anemonefish that dart in and out of the stinging tentacles as you approach. Your guide will lead you on a slow, exploratory swim along the reef flat, allowing plenty of time to observe and photograph multiple anemonefish species at extremely close range. As you move toward the coral slope between 5 and 10 meters, the topography changes to include diverse hard coral formations, with large schools of fusiliers and damselfish hovering in the water column above the reef. Keep an eye out for hawksbill turtles that are often seen foraging on the slope's edge. Deeper down, between 10 and 16 meters, scattered coral bommies host more secretive residents like moray eels and resting lionfish. Finally, your guide will lead the group back to the shallow anemone colonies at 3 to 5 meters for a long, colorful safety stop before surfacing."
