Alor: Kalabahi Bay – Lipa Dive Site – Alor Archipelago
Site Overview
Lipa is a sheltered reef and seagrass site located in Kalabahi Bay approximately 15 minutes by boat from Kalabahi harbor, offering accessible reef diving with abundant marine life in a protected bay environment. The site features a mix of coral slopes and seagrass beds descending from 2 meters to approximately 20 meters, creating diverse habitat types within a single dive. The shallower sections at 2 to 6 meters feature extensive seagrass beds that serve as nurseries for juvenile reef fish and feeding grounds for green turtles. The coral slope at 6 to 12 meters is covered in hard corals including staghorn, plate, and brain corals, with schools of fusiliers, damselfish, and anthias. The seagrass transition zones at 6 to 10 meters are home to cuttlefish, pipefish, juvenile seahorses, and various gobies and blennies. The deeper sections at 12 to 20 meters have scattered bommies on sandy substrate where blue-spotted stingrays, garden eels, and moray eels are common. Hawksbill and green turtles are regular visitors throughout the dive. Lipa is best dived from April through November when the dry season provides optimal visibility. The site is popular as a checkout dive, afternoon dive, and training site. The seagrass beds make the site particularly productive for macro photography, with seahorses, pipefish, and nudibranch species hiding among the grass blades. The sheltered conditions and proximity to Kalabahi make Lipa an ideal complement to the more adventurous dives in the Pantar Strait and outer archipelago.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a controlled descent from the boat directly onto the lush seagrass bed at a depth of approximately 2 to 4 meters, where you can immediately observe juvenile reef fish and occasional cuttlefish perfectly camouflaged among the blades. Your guide will lead the way across the seagrass towards the main coral slope between 6 and 10 meters, carefully scanning the vegetation for seahorses and pipefish that call this area home. The coral slope is exceptionally dense and vibrant, featuring large schools of fusiliers and damselfish that hover in the water column above the reef structure. It is very common to encounter green turtles grazing peacefully in the shallow seagrass zones. As you descend further towards the scattered coral bommies between 10 and 16 meters, look for moray eels, resting lionfish, and blue-spotted stingrays on the sandy patches. The deepest part of the dive reaches about 20 meters, where sandy slopes host colonies of shy garden eels. Your guide will eventually lead the group back to the shallower slope at 5 to 8 meters for a relaxed safety stop, allowing for continued observation of the coral garden and its diverse inhabitants before surfacing."

Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Lipa is an excellent site for divers of all experience levels, ranging from newly certified Open Water beginners to seasoned underwater photographers looking for a relaxed dive close to Kalabahi. The consistently mild current and shallow depth profile make it a premier location for checkout dives, training sessions, and easy afternoon excursions between more demanding trips to the Pantar Strait. Photographers will particularly enjoy the mix of macro life in the seagrass and the wider reef scenes on the slope. Because the most interesting features are found at relatively shallow depths, it also serves as an outstanding snorkeling spot for non-diving companions who wish to see turtles and colorful reef fish in a protected bay environment.
