    Site Overview

The Pantar Strait is the narrow channel between Alor and Pantar islands, approximately 40 minutes by boat from Kalabahi, where powerful tidal currents create one of the most biodiverse marine environments in the Alor Archipelago and all of eastern Indonesia. The strait funnels strong currents between the islands, generating nutrient-rich upwellings that sustain prolific coral growth and attract large pelagic species from the deep waters of the Flores Sea. The dive sites encompass multiple locations along the strait, featuring vertical walls dropping from 3 meters to beyond 40 meters, coral-encrusted pinnacles, and overhanging ledges sheltering diverse marine communities. The strong current keeps the hard corals exceptionally healthy, with massive table corals, dense staghorn formations, and large barrel sponges dominating the shallower sections. The wall sections at 10 to 20 meters are covered in sea fans, soft corals, and crinoids, with grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, and eagle rays patrolling the current. The channel flow brings regular encounters with dogtooth tuna, giant trevally, schools of barracuda, and seasonal hammerhead sharks at 20 to 35 meters. Napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, and hawksbill turtles are resident throughout the reef system. The deeper sections at 25 to 40 meters feature overhangs where whitetip reef sharks rest, and the current-swept pinnacles are encrusted with colorful corals. The Pantar Strait is best dived from April through October during the dry season. The strait is considered one of the premier dive locations in the Alor Archipelago, attracting experienced divers seeking world-class current diving and pelagic encounters.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with a timed entry during slack tide, descending from the boat onto the strait wall at approximately 3 to 5 meters. Your guide leads you along the wall as the mild residual current carries you along the reef edge. The wall drops vertically from 5 to 35 meters, covered in sea fans, barrel sponges, and soft corals. Grey reef sharks patrol the blue water at 15 to 25 meters, and eagle rays glide through the current. Dogtooth tuna and giant trevally hunt along the channel edge. The pinnacles at 15 to 30 meters are encrusted with colorful corals and attract schools of fusiliers and anthias. Your guide leads you to the shallower slope at 8 to 12 meters for the final portion, where the coral garden is dense and colorful. The safety stop at 5 meters is on the reef crest. Monitor your air and depth carefully throughout the dive."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

The Pantar Strait is specifically recommended for advanced divers who have logged at least 50 dives and possess significant experience in strong current environments. The site's powerful and often unpredictable tidal flows, combined with a deep profile and its remote location, demand confident buoyancy control, disciplined air management, and a high level of comfort in challenging underwater conditions. It is not a location for beginners or those uncomfortable with drift diving. However, for those with the necessary skills, the strait offers some of the most rewarding pelagic encounters in Indonesia, making it a bucket-list destination for seasoned underwater explorers and those seeking high-adrenaline marine life interactions in a pristine wilderness setting.
