    Site Overview

Pura Island is a volcanic island located in the strait between Alor and Pantar, approximately 45 minutes by boat from Kalabahi, offering exceptional wall diving and vibrant coral reefs in one of Indonesia's most remote dive destinations. The island sits at the confluence of the Flores Sea and the Banda Sea, where nutrient-rich upwellings create outstanding marine biodiversity. The dive site features vertical walls dropping from 3 meters to beyond 30 meters, coral slopes, and isolated pinnacles rising from the channel floor. The shallower sections at 3 to 10 meters feature dense coral gardens with abundant reef fish, including schools of bannerfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, and surgeonfish. The wall sections at 10 to 20 meters are covered in sea fans, barrel sponges, and soft corals, with grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, and eagle rays patrolling the blue. Hawksbill and green turtles are resident throughout the reef system. Napoleon wrasse and bumphead parrotfish cruise along the wall face. The deeper sections at 20 to 30 meters feature sandy ledges where garden eels colonize the substrate, and overhangs shelter resting whitetip reef sharks. The pinnacles at 15 to 25 meters are encrusted with colorful corals and attract schools of fusiliers, anthias, and sweetlips. Pura Island is best dived from April through November when the dry season provides calmer seas and better visibility. The island's traditional fishing villages add cultural interest during the surface interval. The underwater photography opportunities are exceptional, with both wide-angle and macro subjects in abundance throughout the dive.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with a timed descent from the boat onto the reef crest at approximately 3 to 5 meters, where the moderate current is typically at its most noticeable. Your guide will lead the way along the vertical wall as the current carries you effortlessly around the island's jagged edge. The wall itself drops vertically from 5 meters down to at least 25 meters, and is completely smothered in large sea fans, massive barrel sponges, and vibrant soft corals. Keep your eyes on the deep blue at 15 to 20 meters, where grey reef sharks are frequently seen patrolling and eagle rays may glide gracefully through the flow. Large Napoleon wrasse are known to cruise along the wall face, while hawksbill turtles are often found foraging on the reef structure. Several isolated pinnacles between 15 and 25 meters are heavily encrusted with colorful corals and attract vast schools of reef fish. Towards the end of the dive, your guide will lead you to the shallower reef slope at 8 to 12 meters, where the light penetration makes the coral garden even more spectacular. The safety stop is typically conducted at 5 meters along the upper slope before returning to the boat."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Pura Island is an exceptional choice for intermediate to advanced divers who hold an Advanced Open Water certification and have logged at least 30 dives. Because the site often experiences moderate currents and features a vertical wall profile, divers must possess confident buoyancy control and disciplined air management skills to safely navigate the terrain. Its relative distance from the main hub in Kalabahi also means that divers should be prepared for a longer boat journey and a more remote experience. For those who meet these requirements, the site offers an incredibly rewarding look at one of Indonesia's most pristine marine ecosystems, characterized by high biodiversity and healthy coral growth that is rarely seen in more accessible regions. It is a must-visit for anyone looking for world-class wall diving far off the beaten path.
