    Site Overview

Ternate Island is a small uninhabited island in the Alor Archipelago located approximately 50 minutes by boat from Kalabahi, offering diverse reef environments including wall diving, coral slopes, and small cave systems in a remote wilderness setting. The island benefits from nutrient-rich currents flowing through the archipelago, creating healthy coral growth and attracting diverse marine life. The dive site features a fringing reef system with vertical walls dropping from 3 meters to approximately 30 meters on the exposed northern side, transitioning to gentler coral slopes on the sheltered southern side. The shallower sections at 3 to 10 meters feature diverse hard and soft coral gardens with abundant reef fish, including schools of fusiliers, anthias, and butterflyfish. The wall sections at 10 to 20 meters are covered in sea fans, barrel sponges, and soft corals, with whitetip reef sharks, moray eels, and lobsters inhabiting the crevices. The small cave systems at 12 to 18 meters on the northern side provide habitat for sleeping whitetip reef sharks, schooling glassfish, and decorative crabs. Hawksbill turtles are regular visitors to the reef throughout the dive. The coral slopes at 10 to 20 meters on the sheltered side feature dense staghorn and plate coral formations with juvenile fish nurseries. The deeper sections at 20 to 30 meters have sandy patches where blue-spotted stingrays and garden eels are common. Ternate Island is best dived from April through November when the dry season provides calmer seas and better visibility. The island is uninhabited, adding to the remote wilderness feel, and the site offers excellent opportunities for both wide-angle reef photography and macro work on the coral slopes.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with a controlled descent from the boat onto the exposed northern wall at a depth of approximately 3 to 5 meters. Your guide will lead the group along the vertical face as a moderate current carries you steadily around the island's edge. The wall drops vertically from 5 to 25 meters and is completely encrusted with large sea fans, massive barrel sponges, and vibrant soft corals. One of the highlights is exploring the small cave systems at 12 to 18 meters, where whitetip reef sharks are often seen resting in the shadows and dense schools of glassfish shimmer in the torch light. Throughout the wall section, you'll encounter hawksbill turtles foraging and moray eels patrolling the various crevices. Eventually, your guide will lead you to the sheltered southern slope between 10 and 16 meters, where the coral garden becomes exceptionally dense and diverse. Keep an eye on the sandy patches for blue-spotted stingrays gliding across the bottom. The safety stop is conducted at 5 meters on the upper coral slope, where the surrounding reef fish provide a colorful finale to the dive."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Ternate Island is a fantastic destination for intermediate to advanced divers who hold an Advanced Open Water certification and have at least 30 logged dives. The site's unique features, including its moderate currents and small cave systems, require divers to have confident buoyancy control and a reasonable level of comfort with overhead environments. Its location far from the main hub in Kalabahi also appeals to those seeking a remote wilderness experience in a pristine, uninhabited setting. For underwater photographers, the island offers a great mix of wide-angle opportunities on the walls and macro subjects on the sheltered coral slopes. It is generally not recommended for absolute beginners due to the potential for stronger currents on the northern side and the technical nature of the cave sections. Those looking for a true 'off-the-beaten-path' dive will find Ternate Island to be one of the most rewarding spots in the entire Alor Archipelago.
