    Site Overview

Lipah Bay is a tranquil and picturesque dive site in Amed that offers a completely different experience from the more adrenaline-fueled dives found elsewhere in Bali. This sheltered bay features a gentle slope of hard coral, seagrass beds, and sandy patches that create a diverse mosaic of micro-habitats supporting an impressive array of marine life. The bay's exceptional calmness and shallow depth make it one of the best sites in Bali for macro photography, training dives, and snorkeling. The seagrass beds are home to seahorses, cuttlefish, and the occasional frogfish, while the coral patches harbor a diversity of reef fish and invertebrates that would take multiple dives to fully catalog. Garden eel colonies occupy the sandy areas between the coral formations, with hundreds of individuals extending from their burrows to catch passing plankton. Mandarin fish have been observed in the coral rubble areas during dusk dives, adding to the site's reputation as a critter-hunting paradise. Lipah Bay's gentle conditions and rich biodiversity make it particularly popular with underwater photography workshops and training courses, where students can take their time to perfect their skills without the pressure of current or depth management. The bay is also an excellent place to observe the local traditional fishing culture, as the shoreline is often lined with colorful 'jukung' outrigger boats. The transition from the black volcanic beach to the vibrant underwater world is immediate and striking, providing a sensory feast for anyone who enters the water. Whether you are a seasoned photographer looking for that perfect shot of a rare nudibranch or a family looking for a safe and beautiful place to explore together, Lipah Bay delivers an unforgettable experience that highlights the gentler side of Bali's marine heritage.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with an easy walk into the calm waters of Lipah Bay from the sandy beach. Divers typically swim on the surface to the desired starting point before descending to the reef slope at approximately 3 to 5 meters. From here, you follow the slope downward, exploring the transitions between the different habitat zones: hard coral gardens, seagrass meadows, and sandy patches. Your guide will lead you to the most productive areas for macro life, including specific coral heads known to host seahorses and the seagrass beds where cuttlefish are frequently seen. Move slowly and scan every surface carefully, as the best critters at Lipah Bay are well-camouflaged and easily missed by hasty observers. The sandy areas between the coral formations are home to garden eel colonies that are fascinating to watch as they extend and retract from their burrows. The dive concludes with a gradual ascent back to the shallows, where the safety stop can be performed among the staghorn corals before the easy exit from the beach."
