    Site Overview

The Pyramids is a unique and popular dive site in Amed that features a series of concrete pyramid-shaped artificial reef structures placed on a natural coral slope to enhance marine habitat and provide an interesting underwater landscape for divers. Over the years since their installation, these structures have been completely colonized by hard and soft corals, transforming them into thriving artificial reefs that attract a dense community of reef fish and macro life. The site's name comes from the distinctive geometric shapes of the structures, which create an otherworldly underwater landscape that is both photogenic and biologically productive. The pyramid structures serve as focal points for marine life, with coral groupers establishing territories around each structure, leaf scorpionfish perching on the edges, and schools of anthias and damselfish swarming in the water column above. The sandy patches between the pyramids are home to blue-spotted stingrays and garden eels, while the deeper sections of the slope host larger reef fish and the occasional passing pelagic. The Pyramids is particularly popular as a training site for new divers, as the shallow depth, calm conditions, and well-defined structures make it easy to practice buoyancy, navigation, and other essential skills in a safe and visually stimulating environment.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with a beach entry from the Amed shoreline, followed by a short surface swim to the first pyramid structures at approximately 5 meters depth. From here, divers follow the slope downward, exploring each pyramid structure in turn as they progress along the site. The pyramids are spaced approximately 10 to 15 meters apart and connected by sandy channels, creating a natural navigation course that is easy to follow. Your guide will lead you from structure to structure, pointing out the resident marine life at each one. The coral groupers are particularly friendly and will often approach divers closely, providing excellent photo opportunities. As you progress deeper to around 15 to 20 meters, the pyramids become larger and more heavily colonized, with massive barrel sponges and gorgonian fans adding to the visual appeal. The dive concludes with a gradual ascent back up the slope to the shallower pyramids, where the safety stop can be conducted at 5 meters among the staghorn coral gardens. The total dive time is typically 50 to 60 minutes at a relaxed pace."

    Who is this for?

The Pyramids is an ideal site for beginners, families, and dive students working on their Open Water certification. The calm conditions, shallow profile, and well-defined structures make it a perfect training environment where new divers can build confidence while enjoying abundant marine life. The site is also excellent for underwater photographers who appreciate the combination of interesting artificial structures and diverse marine life. Macro photographers will find plenty of subjects on the pyramid surfaces, while wide-angle shooters can capture dramatic compositions of the geometric shapes against the blue water.
