Belongas Bay: Gili Sarang Dive Site – South Lombok
Site Overview
Gili Sarang is a small, uninhabited rocky island off the south coast of Lombok in Belongas Bay that offers dramatic wall diving in an exposed ocean environment. The island rises steeply from the ocean floor, creating vertical limestone walls that drop from 5 meters to 30 meters, covered in prolific soft coral and sponge growth sustained by the nutrient-rich Indian Ocean currents. The up-current side of the island acts as a feeding station for grey reef sharks that patrol the wall face, while massive schools of barracuda swirl above the pinnacle points. Eagle rays glide past the wall during the dry season, and Napoleon wrasse cruise along the reef edge. The sheltered side of the island offers a gentler slope with excellent coral coverage, including large table corals, sea fans, and dense soft coral gardens. Gili Sarang is less frequently dived than The Magnet and The Cathedral due to its exposed position and the need for favorable conditions, but those who make the trip are rewarded with uncrowded wall diving and reliable pelagic encounters. The site is best suited for advanced divers who are comfortable with strong currents and open-ocean conditions. The island itself is a scenic landmark visible from the mainland, adding to the adventure of the south Lombok diving experience.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a controlled descent from the boat directly onto the up-current side of the island at a depth of approximately 5 to 8 meters. Your guide will lead the way along the jagged wall face, gradually working deeper into the blue as you explore the incredibly colorful soft coral gardens and the numerous crevices where lobsters and moray eels can be found sheltering. At the 15 to 20-meter mark, you will typically feel the current at its strongest; this is also where pelagic encounters are most likely, with grey reef sharks and eagle rays frequently seen passing along the wall face. The deeper sections, reaching down to 30 meters, feature dramatic vertical drops and are often the best place to spot massive schooling barracuda and large trevally. As the dive progresses, your guide will lead the group towards the sheltered side of the island, where the topography transitions into a gentler slope with some of the densest coral coverage in the area. The safety stop is conducted at 5 meters along the shallow reef top, providing a final opportunity to observe the vibrant schools of reef fish and various juvenile species that congregate in the sun-drenched shallows."

Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Gili Sarang is an outstanding choice for advanced divers who have a passion for wall diving and enjoy the thrill of pelagic encounters in raw, open-ocean conditions. Because the site requires navigating strong currents and managing depth across vertical walls, it is best suited for those with a high level of comfort in high-energy marine environments and proven buoyancy control. It is a dream location for wide-angle underwater photographers, as the combination of dramatic underwater scenery and large schooling fish provides endless opportunities for stunning shots. While the site is too challenging for absolute beginners, it offers a rewarding and uncrowded alternative for experienced divers looking for reliable shark sightings and a sense of true underwater adventure far from the more frequented sites of Lombok.
