    Site Overview

Soekarno's Point is the most remote and adventurous dive site in the Belongas Bay area, located on a dramatic headland that extends into the open Indian Ocean on the southern coast of Lombok. Named after Indonesia's first president, the site offers a thrilling combination of wall diving and pelagic encounters in raw, open-ocean conditions. The headland creates a natural barrier that splits the ocean currents, generating feeding stations on both sides where grey reef sharks patrol alongside giant trevally and schooling barracuda. Eagle rays glide past the wall face during the dry season, while massive schools of fusiliers and surgeonfish swirl above the coral-covered slopes. The wall drops from 5 meters to 35 meters, with prolific soft coral and sponge growth sustained by the constant flow of nutrient-rich water. Thermoclines at depth bring cooler water and the possibility of encountering deep-water species. The coral coverage on the shallower sections is exceptional, with large table corals, sea fans, and soft corals creating a vibrant underwater garden. Soekarno's Point is typically combined with The Magnet for a full day of south Lombok pelagic diving. The site requires advanced diving skills and should only be attempted when conditions are favorable, with experienced operators who understand the complex current patterns around the headland.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with a coordinated negative entry from the boat directly onto the up-current side of the headland at a depth of approximately 5 to 8 meters. Your guide will lead the descent along the sheer wall face, carefully spiraling around the headland to stay in the optimal position for marine life viewing. Between 12 and 20 meters, you will encounter the full force of the current, which is where the pelagic action is most intense; here, grey reef sharks and giant trevally are frequently seen patrolling the wall face in search of prey. As you descend further into the deeper sections at 25 to 35 meters, the topography features dramatic vertical drops where large schools of barracuda and occasional eagle rays congregate. Throughout the dive, your guide will manage the group's positioning to ensure the safest and most productive route around the point. The final part of the dive involves working back up the headland to explore the shallower coral slopes between 8 and 15 meters, where the soft coral coverage is at its most vibrant. The safety stop is conducted at 5 meters along the reef top, providing a final chance to observe the diverse reef fish that thrive in these nutrient-rich waters before surfacing."

    Traveler Notes

    Who is this for?

Soekarno's Point is specifically designed for advanced divers who possess significant experience in strong currents, deep water profiles, and exposed open-ocean conditions. The site's remote location and technical requirements mean it is only suitable for those with high-level buoyancy control and disciplined air management skills. It is a premier destination for adventurous divers looking for reliable pelagic encounters and uncrowded, pristine underwater environments far from the main tourist routes of Lombok. Underwater photographers with a focus on wide-angle scenes will find the dramatic headland topography and large schools of predatory fish to be exceptional subjects. However, due to its challenging nature, it is not appropriate for beginners or those who are uncomfortable with high-energy diving environments. For the experienced explorer, this site represents one of the most rewarding and authentic diving experiences in the entire region.
