Belongas Bay: The Cathedral Dive Site – South Lombok
Site Overview
The Cathedral is one of the most visually stunning dive sites in southern Lombok, featuring a massive underwater limestone cave chamber that earns its name from the dramatic light rays that stream through openings in the ceiling, creating an awe-inspiring cathedral-like atmosphere. The cave entrance faces the open Indian Ocean, where the nutrient-rich currents bring abundant marine life past the limestone walls. Inside the chamber, grey reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks rest on the sandy floor, seemingly undisturbed by the light show above them. The cave walls are encrusted with sponges, soft corals, and colorful invertebrates that glow under torch light. Outside the cathedral, the surrounding wall drops from 5 meters to 35 meters and is covered in prolific soft coral growth sustained by the strong currents. Eagle rays and schooling barracuda patrol the outer wall, while lobsters and moray eels shelter in the numerous crevices. The site requires advanced diving skills due to the strong currents, overhead environment inside the cave, and exposed ocean position. The best light effects occur during mid-morning dives when the sun angle maximizes the light penetration through the ceiling openings. The Cathedral is typically combined with The Magnet for an unforgettable day of south Lombok diving that combines spectacular geology with thrilling pelagic encounters.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a controlled descent from the boat onto the outer wall of the limestone formation at a depth of approximately 5 to 8 meters. Your guide will lead the group along the wall, taking time to explore the exceptionally colorful soft coral coverage and the numerous deep crevices where large lobsters and moray eels can be found hiding. As you approach the main cathedral entrance, the wall opens into a massive underwater chamber that is approximately 15 meters wide and 12 meters high. Once inside the cave, you'll be greeted by the breathtaking sight of light rays streaming through ceiling openings, creating dramatic beams in the water column that illuminate the interior. Whitetip and grey reef sharks are frequently seen resting calmly on the sandy floor at 20 to 25 meters. Your guide will use a torch to illuminate the vibrant invertebrate life on the cave walls, which is often missed in the ambient light. After fully exploring the interior chamber, you'll exit back through the main entrance and continue the dive along the outer wall at shallower depths. The safety stop is conducted at 5 meters on the vibrant wall top, surrounded by schools of reef fish."

Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
The Cathedral is an ideal destination for advanced divers who have a particular interest in dramatic underwater topography and the unique atmosphere of cavern environments. The site offers a perfect combination of the light-filled central chamber and a vibrant, current-swept outer wall, providing a diverse experience for both cave enthusiasts and traditional reef divers. Because it involves navigating an overhead environment and potentially strong currents at the entrance, it requires confident buoyancy control and a high degree of comfort in more technical settings. Wide-angle photographers will find the light rays inside the cathedral to be among the most spectacular and photogenic subjects in all of Indonesian diving, offering a chance to capture images of truly exceptional quality. It is generally not recommended for beginners due to the depth of the cave floor and the technical nature of the swim-throughs. For the experienced diver, however, it represents one of the most memorable and unique dives in the South Lombok region.
