Belongas Bay: The Crack Dive Site – South Lombok
Site Overview
The Crack is one of the most unique and adventurous dive sites in southern Lombok, featuring a dramatic narrow fissure in the limestone coastline that divers can swim through in a thrilling drift experience. The crack extends approximately 30 meters through the rock formation, with walls on either side covered in colorful sponges, soft corals, and invertebrates that glow under torch light. The current accelerates through the narrow passage, creating a gentle but exciting drift that carries divers through the formation. Large moray eels, lobsters, and various species of nudibranchs inhabit the crevices and ledges inside the crack, while schools of fusiliers and anthias congregate at the entrance and exit where the light is strongest. The surrounding outer wall offers additional diving with prolific coral growth, grey reef sharks, and schooling reef fish. The geological formation itself is the main attraction, with the narrow walls creating dramatic perspectives and light effects that are a photographer's dream. The Crack requires advanced diving skills due to the overhead environment, strong current inside the passage, and exposed ocean position. The site is best suited for adventurous divers who enjoy unique topographical features and are comfortable in confined underwater environments. The transition from the open ocean into the narrow limestone corridor is striking, as the surge and swell of the Indian Ocean are replaced by a more directed, purposeful flow of water that guides you through the heart of the rock.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a controlled descent from the boat onto the outer wall near the crack entrance at a depth of approximately 5 to 8 meters. Your guide will first assess the current strength and surge levels inside the crack before committing the group to the swim-through. If conditions are deemed favorable, you will enter the crack and allow the naturally accelerated current to carry you steadily through the narrow passage. Inside, the walls are just 2 to 3 meters apart and are densely covered in colorful sponges and vibrant soft corals. Your torch will be essential here to illuminate the large moray eels, spiny lobsters, and rare nudibranchs that inhabit the deep crevices. The passage typically takes about 5 to 10 minutes to navigate. After exiting the crack on the other side, the dive continues along the outer wall at depths between 15 and 25 meters, where you can explore the beautifully encrusted limestone face. The safety stop is conducted at 5 meters along the vibrant wall top, right near the crack entrance where schools of reef fish provide a colorful ending to the dive."

Safety & Hazards
- Strong accelerated current inside the narrow crack formation
- Sharp limestone walls on both sides of the swim-through
- Surge can push divers against the crack walls unexpectedly
- Overhead environment inside the crack limits direct ascent
- Ocean swell on the exposed south coast affecting entry and exit
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
The Crack is a premier destination for advanced divers who have a particular fondness for adventurous topographical diving and unique swim-through experiences. The combination of a specialized geological formation and a current-assisted drift through the center of a coastal rock mass offers a thrilling sensation that is difficult to find at more conventional reef sites. Because it involves navigating a confined overhead environment with accelerated water flow, it requires divers to have excellent buoyancy control and a high level of comfort in potentially surge-prone areas. It is an outstanding site for macro photographers who can find a wealth of invertebrate life within the crack, as well as wide-angle enthusiasts looking to capture the dramatic perspective of the narrow limestone walls. Due to its technical nature, it is not suitable for beginners or those prone to claustrophobia.
