Blue Corner Dive Site – Nusa Penida
Site Overview
Blue Corner is widely regarded as one of the most exhilarating and adrenaline-charged dive sites in all of Indonesia, located at a dramatic underwater promontory on the southern coast of Nusa Penida where the powerful Indian Ocean currents collide with the Bali Sea. The site features a sheer limestone wall that plunges from 5 meters to well beyond recreational limits, with a spectacular pinnacle rising from the wall that acts as a focal point for pelagic species. The convergence of deep ocean currents at the corner creates massive upwellings that bring cold, nutrient-rich water from the deep, sustaining an extraordinary abundance of marine life and attracting some of the largest and most sought-after pelagic species in the ocean. During the mola mola season from August through October, Blue Corner is one of the premier sites in the world for encountering the ocean sunfish, which visit the cleaning stations on the pinnacle with remarkable regularity. Scalloped hammerhead sharks are occasionally spotted in the deeper blue water during the cool season, adding to the site's legendary status among big-animal divers. The wall itself is covered in a spectacular display of soft corals, gorgonian fans, and barrel sponges that pulse and sway in the powerful current. Schools of barracuda and eagle rays are virtually guaranteed on every dive, forming massive aggregations above the pinnacle that create some of the most dramatic underwater scenes imaginable. Due to the extreme currents and exposed location, Blue Corner is strictly for experienced advanced divers, but those who meet the requirements will experience one of the most unforgettable dives of their lives.
Dive Briefing
"The dive is conducted as a high-energy drift dive, with the boat dropping the group at a precise entry point upcurrent of the main corner. It is critical to descend quickly and efficiently to the wall at approximately 15 to 18 meters to avoid being swept off-course by the powerful surface currents. Your guide will lead the way along the vertical limestone wall, moving towards the corner where the current typically accelerates and the marine action becomes significantly more intense. The underwater pinnacle at the corner is the absolute highlight of the dive; this is where mola mola, eagle rays, and massive schools of barracuda congregate in the nutrient-rich upwellings. You will be instructed to position yourself on the upcurrent side of the pinnacle to observe the pelagic action in the deep blue water. After exploring the corner area, the dive continues with a drift along the reef edge, where you can inspect the soft coral-covered surfaces and deep overhangs. Toward the end of the dive, you will deploy your DSMB while still at depth, and the boat will follow your signal for a safe surface pickup after your safety stop."

Safety & Hazards
- Very strong currents at the corner where ocean currents converge
- Down-currents near the wall that can pull divers deeper
- Dramatic thermoclines with water temperatures dropping to 23 degrees
- Exposed southern coast location with potential for large swell
- Remote location requiring reliable boat support and emergency planning
Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Blue Corner is reserved exclusively for highly experienced advanced divers who possess significant current diving experience and have logged at least 50 to 100 dives. The site is technically demanding, requiring an Advanced Open Water certification, a high level of comfort in strong currents and potentially very cold water, and the ability to maintain precise buoyancy in high-surge environments. It is a bucket-list destination for big-animal enthusiasts and those seeking rare pelagic species like the mola mola and scalloped hammerheads. Because the conditions can change rapidly, divers must be physically fit and mentally prepared for a high-adrenaline experience in a raw, open-ocean setting. For the qualified diver, Blue Corner offers a level of excitement and biological abundance that is simply world-class and rarely matched elsewhere in Southeast Asia.
