Buyuk Dive Site – Nusa Penida
Site Overview
Buyuk is an underrated and less-crowded dive site on the northwest coast of Nusa Penida, offering excellent coral slope diving with abundant pelagic encounters. The site features a gently sloping reef that descends from 5 meters to approximately 25 meters, covered in a rich tapestry of hard and soft corals growing on limestone bommies interspersed with white sand channels. The nutrient-rich currents flowing through the channel sustain a thriving ecosystem of reef fish and larger pelagic species. Schools of barracuda patrol the blue water above the reef, while eagle rays glide across the sand channels in search of buried prey. Whitetip reef sharks are resident in the deeper sand areas, and large napoleon wrasse cruise between the bommies with characteristic confidence. The garden eel colonies in the sand patches are among the most extensive in the Nusa Penida region, with hundreds of individuals emerging from their burrows to feed on plankton drifting past. What makes Buyuk particularly appealing is its relative lack of crowds compared to the more famous sites like Toyapakeh and Crystal Bay, allowing divers to enjoy the spectacular marine life in a more peaceful and intimate setting. The healthy coral coverage and diverse topography make Buyuk a rewarding site for both wide-angle and macro photography, while the moderate conditions make it accessible to intermediate divers.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a controlled descent from the boat onto the shallowest section of the reef crest at a depth of approximately 5 to 8 meters. Your guide will lead the group along the gentle slope, gradually working deeper into the blue as you explore the scattered coral bommies and the wide white sand channels that run between them. The upper section of the reef features exceptionally dense staghorn and plate coral formations that provide shelter for vast schools of colorful reef fish. As you progress to the mid-depth bommies between 15 and 20 meters, you will encounter larger soft corals and impressive gorgonian fans swaying in the current. The deep sand channels at 20 to 25 meters are the best places to look for resting whitetip reef sharks and passing eagle rays, while the massive garden eel colonies create an otherworldly landscape of hundreds of swaying heads. The return leg of the dive typically involves working back along the shallower reef, where the natural light makes the coral gardens particularly vibrant and photogenic. Your safety stop is conducted at 5 meters directly above the thriving shallow reef, offering a final chance to observe the busy marine life before surfacing."
