Gili Mimpang Dive Site – Candidasa, Bali
Site Overview
Gili Mimpang is a spectacular offshore pinnacle dive site near Candidasa that delivers some of the most exciting pelagic encounters available on Bali's main island. The site features a dramatic volcanic pinnacle that rises from depths exceeding 35 meters, its slopes covered with pristine coral gardens and massive gorgonian fans that filter the nutrient-rich currents of the Lombok Strait. The pinnacle serves as a magnet for large marine life, with whitetip reef sharks patrolling the base, giant trevally schooling in the current, and eagle rays gliding past the rock face. Reef manta rays make regular appearances during the incoming tide, attracted by the concentration of nutrients and cleaning opportunities. The coral coverage at Gili Mimpang is exceptional, with dense soft coral gardens, barrel sponges, and hard coral formations creating a stunning underwater landscape. The site's exposed position and strong currents make it an advanced dive that rewards experienced divers with world-class pelagic encounters and dramatic underwater scenery. Gili Mimpang is often considered the most challenging but rewarding of the three Candidasa dive sites, alongside Gili Selang and Biaha. The site also features interesting volcanic rock formations and deep-water caves that provide a spectacular backdrop for wide-angle photography. Whether you are searching for a rare shark encounter or simply want to marvel at the scale of the underwater architecture, Gili Mimpang delivers an unforgettable experience that highlights the raw power of the Bali marine environment.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a coordinated negative entry upstream of the main pinnacle, followed by a rapid descent to the primary reef slope at a depth of approximately 12 to 18 meters. It is critical to stay close to the rock wall during the descent to minimize the effect of the strong currents and maintain group control. Your guide will lead the way along the upstream face of the pinnacle, where the pelagic action is typically at its most intense. You should keep one eye on the reef for smaller life and the other on the deep blue water, as manta rays and large eagle rays often appear suddenly from the current. The deeper sections, reaching down to 35 meters, offer the best chances for shark encounters but should be explored briefly with very careful monitoring of your no-decompression limits. The dive concludes with a gradual, controlled ascent and a thorough safety stop at 5 meters before deploying your DSMB for a safe boat pickup."

Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Gili Mimpang is strictly reserved for experienced advanced divers who have extensive practice in strong current environments and feel comfortable with deep-water profiles. The site's dynamic conditions and exposure to the open waters of the Lombok Strait require divers to have impeccable buoyancy control and a high degree of situational awareness. It is a premier destination for big-animal enthusiasts and those who enjoy the thrill of adrenaline-fueled drift diving in a raw marine setting. Underwater photographers specializing in wide-angle scenes will find the dramatic pinnacle architecture and large schooling fish to be world-class subjects. Because of the technical demands of the site, it is not appropriate for beginners or those who are uncomfortable with high-energy diving conditions. For the qualified diver, however, Gili Mimpang offers one of the most rewarding and biologically intense dives in all of Bali.
