Gili Selang Dive Site – Candidasa, Bali
Site Overview
Gili Selang is one of the most spectacular dive sites in the Candidasa area, a dramatic coral wall that rises from the depths off a small rocky islet just south of the Candidasa coastline. The site benefits from its position in the nutrient-rich waters of the Lombok Strait, where the Indonesian Throughflow brings an extraordinary abundance of marine life that transforms the wall into a living tapestry of color and biodiversity. The wall face is covered with massive gorgonian fans, soft corals in every shade of pink, orange, and purple, and barrel sponges that provide habitat for a staggering diversity of smaller creatures. Whitetip reef sharks patrol the base of the wall, while Napoleon wrasse cruise through the bommies in search of a meal. Hawksbill turtles are regular visitors, often seen gliding gracefully along the wall face. On the best days, reef manta rays cruise past the islet during the incoming tide, attracted by the nutrient-rich upwellings. The current at Gili Selang creates excellent drift diving conditions, allowing divers to cover a large area of the wall with minimal effort while enjoying the spectacular marine scenery. The site is often combined with nearby Biaha and Gili Mimpang for a full day of world-class diving in the Candidasa area.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a boat drop-off at the upstream end of the islet, where divers descend quickly to the wall at approximately 10 to 15 meters depth. From here, your guide will lead you along the wall face in a gentle drift, maintaining a depth between 15 and 25 meters to balance air consumption with marine life viewing. The wall runs for approximately 200 meters along the islet, and the dive typically covers the most productive sections in a single pass. Pay attention to the overhangs and crevices along the wall face, where moray eels, lobsters, and sleeping turtles are frequently found. The deeper sections of the wall (25-30 meters) are where whitetip reef sharks are most commonly found resting on the sandy ledges. Keep one eye on the blue water above and to the side of the wall, where manta rays and eagle rays are occasionally spotted. The dive concludes with a gradual ascent to the shallower sections for your safety stop at 5 meters before the boat picks you up."

Traveler Notes
Who is this for?
Gili Selang is best suited for intermediate to advanced divers who are comfortable with moderate current and have experience with drift diving. While the site is accessible to Open Water divers in calm conditions, the most impressive features are found at depths that favor those with Advanced certification. Underwater photographers will find the wall to be an excellent site for both wide-angle and macro photography, with dramatic compositions of the vertical reef landscape and close-up portraits of the abundant critter life. Divers who enjoy the combination of wall diving, drift diving, and the possibility of big animal encounters will find Gili Selang to be one of the most rewarding sites in the Candidasa area.
