Derawan Archipelago: Sangalaki Manta Run Dive Site – Derawan Archipelago
Site Overview
Derawan Archipelago: Sangalaki Manta Run is a remarkable dive site in the Derawan Archipelago region, situated where nutrient-rich currents create thriving marine ecosystems that support extraordinary biodiversity throughout the year. The site features pristine coral formations descending from 3m to 25m, with exceptional coral coverage across every depth level. Sangalaki is one of the world's best manta ray cleaning stations where reef mantas gather daily for cleaning by wrasses. The site is accessed from Derawan by boat and is best dived from April through November during the dry season when visibility reaches 20 to 30 meters and seas are generally calmest. Derawan Archipelago: Sangalaki Manta Run remains one of the less-dived sites in the region, offering pristine conditions and uncrowded experiences that are increasingly rare in popular dive destinations. The coral diversity and fish density at this site consistently impress visiting divers and underwater photographers alike. The underwater landscape is characterized by pristine coral formations that have thrived in the nutrient-rich waters of the Derawan Archipelago region for decades, creating a living reef system of remarkable beauty and ecological importance. Divers consistently report that the marine biodiversity encountered here rivals even the most celebrated dive destinations in Indonesia, with healthy coral coverage extending from the shallow reef crest to the deepest sections. The relative isolation of Derawan as a dive hub means that the reefs have experienced minimal dive pressure, preserving their pristine condition for future generations of divers to explore and appreciate.
Dive Briefing
"The dive begins with a descent from the boat onto the reef crest at approximately 3 to 6 meters. Your guide leads you along the reef slope in the direction of the moderate current, descending gradually to 20 to 25 meters. The reef is covered in dense hard and soft corals at every depth, with resident turtles, Napoleon wrasse, and schools of reef fish throughout. The deeper sections feature sandy ledges and overhangs where whitetip reef sharks rest during the day. Throughout the dive, your guide will point out notable marine species and interesting coral formations that you might otherwise miss. The variety of habitats ensures that every minute of the dive offers something new and exciting to discover. Your guide signals the ascent and you work your way back up to the shallower reef at 5 to 8 meters where the coral garden is spectacular in the sunlight. The safety stop is conducted along the upper slope before surfacing near the boat. Total dive time is typically 50 to 60 minutes depending on air consumption and the depth profile chosen."
