    Site Overview

Pulau Ende is a small volcanic island located approximately 20 minutes by boat from Ende on the south-central coast of Flores Island, offering accessible reef diving in a relatively unexplored region of eastern Indonesia. The island sits in Ende Bay, sheltered from the open ocean swells of the Savu Sea, creating calm conditions suitable for all certification levels. The site features a fringing reef system around the island with a gradual coral slope descending from 2 meters to approximately 25 meters over a volcanic rock substrate. The shallower sections at 2 to 8 meters are covered in hard corals including staghorn, plate, and brain corals, with abundant damselfish, chromis, and juvenile reef fish. The slope at 8 to 16 meters features larger coral formations, barrel sponges, and sea fans, with schools of fusiliers, snapper, and sweetlips. Hawksbill turtles are regular visitors to the reef, and moray eels, lionfish, and scorpionfish inhabit the volcanic rock crevices. The deeper sections at 16 to 25 meters have scattered bommies on sandy substrate where blue-spotted stingrays and garden eels are common. The volcanic rock formations at depth provide excellent habitat for nudibranchs, flatworms, and other macro species, making the site appealing to underwater photographers. Pulau Ende is best dived from April through November when the dry season provides the calmest conditions and best visibility. The site is relatively unknown to international divers, offering a genuine off-the-beaten-path experience. Ende itself is a historic town where Indonesia's first president Soekarno was exiled, adding cultural depth to any diving trip.

    Dive Briefing

"The dive begins with a controlled descent from the boat onto the shallow, sun-drenched reef flat at a depth of approximately 2 to 4 meters, where vibrant staghorn and plate corals create a colorful backdrop against the dark volcanic rock. Your guide will lead the group on a slow exploration along the gradual slope as it descends towards 15 meters. You'll notice dense schools of fusiliers and damselfish constantly moving through the water column just above the coral garden. It is very common to encounter hawksbill turtles peacefully grazing on the reef during this section. As you reach the larger coral bommies between 10 and 16 meters, your guide will point out moray eels, lionfish, and well-camouflaged scorpionfish that inhabit the deep crevices in the volcanic substrate, while blue-spotted stingrays can often be seen gliding across the nearby sandy patches. The deeper part of the dive, between 16 and 25 meters, features scattered bommies and interesting volcanic rock formations that are often carpeted with colorful nudibranchs and flatworms. The dive concludes with a slow ascent back up the slope to the shallow reef for a relaxed safety stop at 5 meters, allowing for a final look at the busy reef community before returning to the boat."
